Any Thornless Roses in Your Garden?

towandaaz

What a pleasure they are! Do you have thornless roses in your garden? Which ones?

I have Bella di Todi which I just realized is thornless! I was fiddling around cleaning underneath BdT, and I suddenly realized I wasn't being harpooned! HMF doesn't list it as thornless. It's such a lovely rose. Nice, healthy, clean foliage. It doesn't bloom like crazy, but they're lovely, large blooms -- in my zone, it's in the beginning of it's third flush.

I am always dubious about the phrase "thornless roses", because over the years I have discovered that many people, and many rose books, use "thornless" when they really mean "not very many thorns in some circumstances". So, I only use it when I have a rose which is truly, absolutely, thornless, 24/7 12 months of the year. Here are roses I actually grow in my garden which are thornless - I'm sure there are others.

Banksia lutea (Yellow Lady Banks Rose) - banksia

Schmidt't Smooth Yellow - polyantha thought to be the "lost" rose 'Eugenie Lamesch'

    Jackie

P.S. Weird that both of these roses are yellow...

I learned that the hard way with Heritage! But Reine des Violletes seems to actually be, at least so far.

I have a climbing Clotilde Soupert. It is nearly thornless. I have Key West Rock Rose. It is thornless.

*edit to correct KWR rose's name.

My Earth Angel definitely has some thorns. In addition to Heritage, Mme Alfred Carriere has few thorns.

The following are low-thorn for me, not sure if I have any that are thornless:-

Cl Pinkie Mme Plantier Snow Goose (DA)

A list of vicious-thorned roses would be a lot longer with Darlow's Enigma leading the way.

Gertrude Jekyll is the most hideously thorned monster I have ever grown. It could be used to keep people in prison, or in the manufacture of perforated leather (punches right though leather gloves).

Thanks everyone for your lists of thornless roses. :-)

BenT, I've got an Earth Angel coming sometime this month and very much looking forward to it.

Suncoastflowers, I don't see Key Rock Rose on HMF. Is there another name for it?

    Kes, Softee is adorable!

Jackie, that's right about Lady Banks! And, thank goodness because they get so big.

We sure could name roses that go the other way - thorny monsters! Some of the worst are the ones with thorns under the stems of leaflets. Yeow!

For me the roses that have been very light on thorns are Rosette Delizy, G Nabonnand, Mrs. Dudley Cross and Ruebens,.

I have Heritage and it is sort of thornless, but Zepherine Drouhin is REALLY thornless! I love it! It is a monster of a rambling rose, but it is not a problem to prune it or train it. It really is a no thorn rose! Another rose that I have that is thornless is Marie Pavie, a lovely polyantha that smells heavenly!

I bought Key West Rock Rose from Rose Petals Nursery. I corrected the name in my original responses I think most, if not all, the pictures in HMF are Cyd's anyway. http://rosepetalsnursery.com/rose.php?pid=665&cid=&rose=Key%20West%20Rock%20Rose

Peggy Martin and Reine des Violettes

This is their first year in my garden, but I can already see why they are considered nearly thornless. So far I haven't seen a single thorn on either. This will probably change with maturity when they may get a few thorns.

Nahema! I have two I'll have to check - probably almost....

Suncoast, thanks for the link. Interesting... I grew up in Key Largo and vacation/visit relatives in KW a few times a year so I have a strong connection. Thanks for that!

towandaaz, I agree, it is such a pleasant surprise not to get stabbed, or tangled by a rose.

My G Nabonnand, Mrs Dudley Cross and General Schablikine are thornless. I've only had Gen S a year though, so that might change. My R de V was thornless too, but long gone, as it didn't do well.

Thornless roses can produce stems with stems thorns and roses that normally have thorns may produce branches without thorns.

15 years ago, I rooted a cutting from thornless branch found on Louis Philippe, from this cutting I have produced 100s of thornless Louis.

This year I planted a new modern rose "hedge" which includes Thomas Affleck! Wish I'd also included Lady of Shallott, I love her vivid color.

Some of the most vicious thorns I've encountered can be found on Bubble Bath. Very thin, very sharp, and mounted at a bad angle.. If I'd known I would NEVER have ordered her as I planned to train her on a trellis. Train her, HAH! I can't get anywhere near her...

Excellenz Von Schubert A few thorns (so not 100% thornless) & very disease resistant here, no spray. It looks nice in landscape & wafts fragrance quite a distance from plant. (Not a good cut flower unfortunately.)

Also Kathleen Harrop, lighter pink sport of Zepherine Drouhin.

I love almost thornless climbers. Such a pleasure to train! What great lists everyone shared here.

Peggy Martin is almost thornless. Which is wonderful because it grows so much there's a lot of training that needs to happen and it's as easy and training a vine.

Sally Holmes has very few thorns.

A rose sold to me as seven sisters by the Sac Cemetsry is almost thornless on some canes, but not others. It's still enjoyable to train. Same with Castro Breen Red Climber (possibly Bloomfield Courage).

I have them both near Sombreuil and Florentina. Huge difference!

Is that really true that taking a cutting with no thorns then produces a thornless plant?? Wow.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thornless roses. Some good ones here. Thanks again. :-)
