I don't see a picture of where it's going to be hung in the room. I do like it in the first little picture.

I just can't see well whether there's a space between the mantel-and the edge of the mock up

It would be hung where the newspaper is. I haven't thought about that April- there's probably an inch of space there.

If it were hung it would look "squished in" and even if it's left leaning I'm afraid it's still too large. What about putting it in that large empty area to the left and doing some smaller things on the right wall (maybe some black and white family photos? Then you can decide on something else for over the fireplace, which could even be a mirror. If you decide to do that, I would choose something quite a bit smaller and more rectangular than the painting. That wall could really be a beautiful focal point for the room.

The piece is pretty but will struggle for breathing room over the mantle. If it is a mass produced piece I'd wait to find something slightly smaller. If it is fine art, lean it and someday give it more space in a different location.
