From single storey catslide to double storey?

Hi there, we are looking to buy a house and wondered if there is any scope for improvement. We want to ask

First is there scope to change catslide roof, i.e. raise the wall and add an additional room upstairs. So change to something similar to the second picture.

Below is picture of some houses on the same street that appear to have been converted the single storey catslide roof into double. These are not the only ones, there is quite a few more of them that look like this.

Same question is for the back

There is also a catslide roof at the back, is it possible to change this and allowing for the wall to be raised and creating extra space upstais.

**please note the current single storey extension that you see already has permission to be a double storey if we do buy the property we would be hoping to build a room on top in the near future. **

Of course it can be done ... all it takes is time and money!

The question is, why not buy a larger house instead? It might be cheaper to buy a larger house, than buying a smaller house and doing major construction.

We also don't have that many semi-detached homes here in the US, so not sure what issues might arise with your next door neighbors when doing projects like these.

Oh yes, i think you are right, i will go to the UK site. The house is on for a price we can afford. If we wanted a bigger house, we cannot afford it.

Shazza, sometimes the cost of a smaller house plus construction costs will be greater than if you had just bought a larger house. You need to have a reputable builder visit the house and give you a realistic price for the improvements you want to make. The final price will always be more as there are always unexpected issues that are found when you take apart older homes.

We are remodeling our kitchen and we found some old water damage behind our sink. It added 2 weeks of work and involved taking apart a whole corner of the house. I don't have a total number yet, but I'm guessing it will add $10,000 to the final cost.

Love the "cat slide" characterization of a roof. Never heard that one before. Must be common on the other side of the pond!

And to your question, of course it's possible to do what you ask. The fact that there are other, existing houses which have done so is evidence that time and money can accomplish almost anything.

I'm familiar with the term. Love a nice catslide roof. Unfortunately, most of the ones in my neighborhood now have aluminum fascia that has been notched to fit and lost their graceful curve.
