The botanical term is 'semiamplexicaul' - leaves that lack a petiole and wrap partially around a stem.

Might have to come back when the plant in question blooms......nothing I recognize :-)

Rick, I'm posting my plant again when it blooms, unless you beat me to it. Those 2 terms mean the same thing. Leaves that clasp directly to the stem.

Amplexicaul means embracing and surrounding the stem, which is what all perfoliate leaves do.

Please reread what I wrote!! The term describing the leaf attachment of the plant in the photo is semiamplexicaul. Not perfoliate, not amplexicaul!!

Carol, I've been getting an Aster vibe about these plants, and the flower buds look Aster like too. They have gotten tall and remind me of the wood Asters growing near them. I was fearing it might have weedish flowers, but I'm hoping they are the pretty blue ones like in your link. It seems to be like an eternity waiting for the flowers, same way I feel about the wood Asters. I will post a picture as soon as I see flowers so everyone can have some closure. Blueberry, it's all good. I would have said my plant was perfoliate too, until I found out it's actually semiperfoliate. I still need to dig a little deeper to comepletely know the difference. I was never mad at anyone. I was just trying to get to the truth. And I wasn't mad that someone deleted their comment. I delete comments too when I say something really stupid, but I do it very soon after commenting. If I am wrong about something or get into a heated debate I think it's important to leave the comment intact so readers can understand how events unfolded. Carol, thank you again for the i.d.. I hope you're right, and you usually are. The weird thing is, I have no idea how they showed up in my garden. I've never noticed them in the wild around here, perhaps they were in some seeds that I scattered who knows when. Judging by the size of the developing buds, and knowing that the flowers are an inch wide, it will probably be a few weeks before any flowers appear, patience is a virtue. :))
