Knotty Pine Built-ins and Fireplace Need Update

Hello All! my husband and I have lived here 4+ years and ALL I have begged for is a mantle to hang stockings but he wants to go all out and repaint or something so I am trying to get an idea of what is good without destroying the knotty pine paneling. I dont like how dark and gloomy our room is but I also do NOT want to paint the paneling if possible because our entire room/most of the house is paneling and it's so cozy.

FYI This room is a huge living room / dining room combo with 2 matching ceiling fans and 3 huge windows.

I will take ANY suggestions y'all have please! Also, I especially want to replace the floor in entryway and hearth and definitely the fireplace metal cover thing and hardware just need ideas. Thanks!!

The red tile entryway matches the red tile hearth (both of which I would LOVE to replace if not too expensive)

Chelsea, The dark paneling and fireplace would look better if their was a balance of light and dark elements. If the furniture was lighter, use light colored pillows, off white rug or light color pattern, light off white drapes and a large art piece that is light colored as well. This will brighten up the room. Best wishes

I agree with the comments above. Right now, ALL of your elements in the room are the same brown/red - floor, walls, fireplace, rug, furniture. Personally, I would paint the paneling. But if you like it and want to keep it, consider painting your bookcases a warm white or cream, and using a much larger light colored rug in the room. A larger, brighter, horizontal piece of art would be better over the fireplace. I don't mind the screen or the hearth which both blend well with your brick.
