New to lawn care. How do I get started with getting rid of weeds?

As you can see in the photos below, the grass seems to have weeds spread throughout the lawn (a noticeably large patch can be seen in the background of the first photo.) I'd like to have a nice-looking lawn, but this is the first time I've owned a home with a lawn so I'm not really sure where to begin. Do I need to invest in some Round-up and attack these guys with it? I don't want to hurt the healthy parts of my lawn though. I bought a mower with mulching capability, but haven't mowed yet. I'm guessing it's not a good idea to mulch-mow over weeds?

If someone can provide me with advice or some resources with good info on ridding my yard of weeds, I'd appreciate it. FYI, this is in Texas.

It looks like you have a bermuda lawn. Do not use Roundup, it will kill your lawn. You can spray the entire with a broad leaf week killer. You can get one that attaches to your hose. You may need to spray it a couple of times. That will take care of the weeds that are not grassy weeds. For the grassy weeds it is best to prevent them with pre emergents. They are granular and are applied like fertilizer. If you are in N. TX then you will need to apply that on March 1, June 1 and Sept. 1. If you live in other parts of TX then check with your County extension agency for the proper dates.

Keep your grass cut short, 1-1,1/2" . Taller grass will not be as thick. Mow low and mow often. This will help to thicken the grass. Fertilize once the grass start growing well, lightly every 4-6 weeks if you are trying to improve your lawn.

    Good luck!

The thistles can just be gouged out with a narrow trowel or other tool. Mulch mowing over weeds wouldn't be a problem providing they haven't set seed or aren't species which can propagate by chopped off pieces of stem. Better to mow now than leave it until the weeds start seeding.

Use ortho nutsedge killer ready to spray, it will kill all that garbage & is easily found at any big box store. A traditional broadleaf killer will contain 2,4d which is rough on bermuda. The sulfentrazone will yellow it for a few days but not nearly as bad as

Make sure to do it later in the evening when it cools off and you want it to be dry for 24 hours(dont do it if you have rain in the forecast). Doing it in the evening will help to not yellow none of the green bermuda. Also I would use some soap to make sure the product sticks to the weeds longer. I use celsius with a drop or two of baby shampoo when I have weeds.

I would go with a product called weed beater by Bonide and mix it with a surfactant called spreader sticker or turbo. The purpose of surfactant is to help the weed killer stick to the weed.

The reason you got weeds is bc of your soil. Weed killer is just a band aid on the problem. Having a healthy soil will prevent weeds. Compost is what I use to fix my soil problems. Hope this helps.
