That upper section of roots has a stiff root flair in it so it doesn't really press down. I did gently press down on it, but perhaps I could have been a little stronger. I ended up moving the tree a foot further from the house and planted it upright and mounding the soil higher in the back.

hopefully someone else will chime in.. but if this is a rooted cutting.. rather than grafted ... perhaps there is nothing to worry about ... just plant it ...

in other words... there isnt a root flare... as we might define it ...

I'd be inclined to plant the tree straight, then if the roots on the high side were still out of the ground, I'd fill in some soil on that side, so the roots wouldn't be exposed to the air and continue to function. The side towards the wall wouldn't show that much and once the tree gets larger, it won't be as big of an issue.

There's always a way. :-)

hmm .... just plant it like it was in the pot .... if it was rooted .... that is how it should be ...

if someone finally comes along and answered my premise ... you can always reset it ....

all that said... why is it set.. so in a year or two.. it will be brushing the brick??? .. or perhaps that is just the holding spot???

if you know the wholesaler ... maybe you could call and ask them if its a rooted plant ...

Pretty sure I saw the root flare and the graft, but it's pretty hard to look at now. Maybe this picture shows it better.

I did move it further away from the wall. My thinking is it only grows 6"-8" a year, it likes to be shorn and will take a couple years before it starts growing at that rate. The outside leaves are now 2' away from the wall. So I figure I have 7-8 years before it starts hitting the bricks. Am I crazy?

Am I crazy?

==>>> are you changing the topic? ..... lol ...

I already know the answer to that question. I suppose I should've asked if I should move it even further from the house.

change of topic ;

Are you crazy? ;-}

I bought that as Sagae (among a batch of Sagae) and it looked like Sagae, but is looking more like a tall Liberty these days.
