I'd let the view be the star and imitate the other balusters.

Did someone tell you to "bring it up to code" or? That rail may have met code when house was built. If so there's no reason to change it.

If you have to update it, maybe glass railing in front of it?

More balusters just like those. Just set new ones halfway between the existing ones.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting -- it is the gap that is currently between the balusters that is not code. We are opening as an airbnb and want it to be safe so dogs or kids don't go/fall through. We wanted to do cable but were told kids can climb and it is not code here in New Brunswick.

@Seabornman good point. We only learned of the code when we wanted to change the railing. See my response to Patricia above. Thanks for you input.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting ... forgot... code as I understand it is 4" between... ours are about 7" apart.

Thats how it works anything new needs to be to the new code, that is why ours in not being replaced and it is in great shape so let sleeping dogs lie. I mentioned the height only because that code changed too from 1956.

In view of the style and purpose of the home i wouldn’t incorporate anything new or modern...just add more of the same...use the same material so it will age to the same color
