Grohe Valve Cartridge Replacement

Stiffness of lavatory valve operation led me to remove the handle and notice mineral deposits and corrosion inside handle (see photo) and elsewhere. Because water should not be getting in there, I concluded there must be a leak associated with the cartridge and bought a replacement. Looking to replace it and turning the nut (C in photo) with a wrench met with resistance after some stiff movement. I was not able to find a detailed drawing showing the parts assembly and did not wish to force anything. I noticed there is a larger black plastic nut (B in photo) that looks like it might prefer a special socket tool. Is B limiting the rotation of C? If it seems like a dumb question, please bear in mind that I have no picture of how the valve operates or goes together. A few hints on this repair from someone experienced with these parts would be most welcome.
