I would start with something fast and easy, like a dwarf zinnia in the center, sweet alyssum in the back and nasturtium trailing down the front of the pot. But I don't have much experience with annual flowers (just annual herbs and veggies, like you) so that's all I can come up with :)

I don't know where you're located, but to get them going you may need to provide them with light and heat indoors.
