Hi all, first time post-er, please forgive my ignorance. I'm no not a green thumb by any stretch, and I've bought some trees and shrubs for a step slope that I need to plant on for a building permit. Anyway, I've planted two Douglas fir that we bought from the city. They looked great when we bought them, but after transplanting them they look terrible. I'm hoping that they will survive, but it doesn't look like it. I've read some comments on other threads about looking for buds near the top but honestly I have no idea what I'm looking for. It looks dead to me, but it's like a second opinion (and 3rd, 8th, etc). I've been watering it but inconsistently (average once or twice per week). Any help is greatly appreciated. Other info, this slope is very steep and lots of rocks underneath, but very soft (tough to stand on). It's and established slope that was once covered with ivy, which we removed because it was looking or other trees. Also, we're in a drought here.
