Island Decor: Centerpiece or Plain?

Hi - I have a large kitchen island (5’x10’), and I’m struggling with what to do with it. Should I leave it clear or should I add some sort of centerpiece? Like what?

A bowl of fruit should be enough. Pretty bowl but utilitarian. Nothing else.

I think an interesting shape low stainless steel bowl. This kitchen has lots of pattern already in BS & rugs. The stainless in lighting, appliances, cab hardware is also a feature & I’d play off that.

A vase of flowers is never inappropriate.

Pretty kitchen! My island is also 5’x 10’ (but no sink) and i have a tray with A vase/greenery and change out seasonal decor (today i just put pumpkins). I really only need to move it when guests are over OR we’re using the while island for baking or pasta making 😊

You have a lot going on visually behind the island, so I would do something low ... may be one of those pretty succulent arrangement in a shallow ceramic pot.

Something like this, but not so big. If you don't have a green thumb, you can buy pretty realistic faux succulent and make your own arrangement.

I'll challenge that idea, Chispa. It's a kitchen, on a functioning work space. Keep it simple and food related. It will be moved often enough, when you need the full work space.

I have an attractive knife stand holding my favorite prep knives.

@fori "A vase of flowers is never inappropriate." I'll be the most inappropriate person you'll never meet. Where else would I put flowers?

I agree, fresh flowers are always perfect!

I like it clean. In our house it would get covered with homework, toys, etc.

i agree with others, someting low. you have a lot going on visually, not in a bad way, but adding more visual stimulation is bordering on too much.

i would do a rectangular/oval wooden bowl and add seasonal touches. Pumpkins, gourds, christmas balls if u celebrate, winter greens with a candle in the middle, easter eggs if u celebrate, fake lemons, fake green apples etc....

put another way, some natural elements.

I like cleared off spaces. Only thing I would consider is a bowl or basket of fresh fruit or a beautiful vase filled with fresh flowers.

Love your kitchen. Like Anne’s idea of a flexible accent.
