Window rot issue

In the process of cleaning out some of the leaves, spiders, etc from my window this morning I noticed one side between the main window and screen was sagging. I pushed on it a little and it started to give. Long story short it appears some water got in there and has destroyed at least the top layer of wood and the top part of the 2x4 (or whatever it is, I can't see it, can only feel it) is soft as well, but not falling apart. See pics. The cause appears to be lack of sufficient caulking on some of the trim just under the window. I immediately fixed it but the damage has been done.

In any case how should I be approaching this and who is best to call? General contractor to investigate how bad it is? A window/siding contractor? Anyone been through this before and have any other advice?

Your gonna need more than a bandaid there and that leak was more than missing caulk. I would get a window and siding guy or a good independent contractor as the siding will need to be removed and more than likely the window and some framing replaced. Cannot be sure how much damage and the required repair until some selective demo is done.

Agreed on more than a bandaid repair, I'm going to do whatever it takes to get this fixed up. If it's only 2 windows (I discovered another uncaulked one not nearly as bad but soft wood) and some framing I'd be thrilled.

I do really think it was only the caulk though since another window has the same issue.

I had a window that looked like that. I was having all my windows replaced. The one that looked bad like yours had rot in the 2x4 framing below it and I had to have drywall and insulation removed/replaced too.
