clumping, annual (?) Poaceae, Europe

Hi there

I found a bunch of these on a green roof in Europe, z7,

quite certain volunteers, flown there

first I thought perhaps some Holcus, but I think the clump is too large

sorry, just this one pic

the blades themselves were hairy on both sides

rather soft, not sharp, not damaging to fingers (like Calamagrostis or something)

no special scent or anything

to my surprise no stalks yet, perhaps some kind of "weedy millet"

the larger clumps looked very round

ring a bell? I just thought this could fall under some 10-feet-rule

hard to define much with the sun shining on and thru it ...

looks like a rogue lawn grass .. the type of clump i would dig out of my flower beds.. and plant a divot in a dog damage spot in the lawn..

in my case.. it was kentucky blue ...

why do you think its an annual???

and.. i didnt catch the roof part at first reading .... lawn seed doesnt really fly around.. unless the bird thing .....

it reminds me a bit of a spent Stella d' Oro day lily or this grass that I planted a while back that has a habit of spreading........the name escapes me tho, not fescue for sure......darn brain! I'll chime back in if I remember the name, but don't hould your breath. Gardengal would probably know the name......

Yea, should have known that the pics do not really suffice

@Ken, I think I assumed wrong when calling it annual, when rethinking:

annual, very short lived species tend to flower very early, so no flowers should point to perennial actually,

it is definetely a grass, some Poaceae, (no Hem or some such)

good news I will be back on that roof in September and then either take more pics ot one actual clump.

unless the gardeners have it eliminated till then...

and guess what, even though it is in a roof top, roughly 20 Meter (or 20+ yards) high or above ground level,

all sorts of volunteers make it up onto the roof via air, wind? birdpoop?

some different willows

at least one poplar/ Populus

some thistle (Sonchus)

several Buddleja davidii (all flowering even though just ankle- to knee high)

and the most astonishing were some reeds, or Typha, when I pointed out some young Typha-seedlings the gardeners were like: whatever and very doubtfull

after finding a mature specimen and getting it out of the "soil" or rather substrate with the impressing rhizoms still attached they went quiet and the boss took it to show the gardeners who do the weeding in this roof garden.

so, with some luck I post some more pics in September

All the above listed plants are wind dispersed. Grasses aren't usually, but light seeds in an urban environment with updrafts could easily find their way to a roof.
