Why is there a gap between the wall and the left side of the vanity?

Won't stuff like towels or bars of soap fall down there? It's not the first time I've seen such a gap. Is there a design guideline against kitting a bathroom vanity all the way into the corner?

By adding a gap at the wall, it makes it feel more unfitted and more like a piece of furniture. In a small space, this adds interest.
