Crown Molding meeting door trim

User

Hi there! I was hoping to get some suggestions. Here is the situation: As you can see on the photo the crown molding that I am installing is interrupted by the door trim which touches the ceiling. How do I make it look good? I opted for creating a return on both sides. It looks ok, but not perfect. What are the alternatives??

I considered butting it against the trim but the molding sticks out about 1/4 inch. Looks weird - I guess I could sand it to make a transition smoother.

I also thought about putting the moulding on the door trim (like in the photo - I am just holding the molding - In real live I would make it look much better). But will that also look strange??? It is the only place in the house that has that problem so also the only door that would have molding.

Any suggestions/ideas??
