for what it is worth -- I would recommend using 1 x 10's or 1 x 8's instead of 1 x 12's -- better stability -- but will be more expensive -- more battens+ more labor.

sorry this posted faster than I expected -- the image I attached shows 1 x 8's -- on this project, sim to the other one, the battens were used for the window trim -- but you can see here that boards were cut, if necessary to keep better batten spacing over all -- image of other house has batten trim a bit too close to battens on the boards -- had the boards adjacent to windows been cut, it would have looked better.
