Wood floors in kitchen? Pros and Cons?

I am building a new house and very soon I need to choose a floor for my kitchen! I love the look of dark walnut wood floors against white cabinets/white marble countertops, but is it really unpractical? Will I regret doing wood floors because they will not last or will I love it? I don't want them to get ruined fast but I don't know any other tiles that will look good with my white cabinets/calcutta marble countertops. HELP!

i forgot to add i cook A LOT and have little kids!

I have no issues with hardwood at all in the kitchen since it was installed in 2006.

No you will not regret putting in wood floors, if thats what you want then go for it. I have antique pine wide board in the kitchen and wouldn't trade it for any thing else!

Put at least 3 coats of polyurethane on them for a good protection, especially if a little one likes to try bouncing a solid hard ball off of the floor.

Go for it! We have had hardwood in our kitchen for almost twenty years and it has worn minimally. Our kitchen is high traffic with teenaged boys and all of their friends. It seems to be the favorite room in the house for them. :)
