Using rugs in kitchen area.

Is it really practical to use a rug on your kitchen floor if you cook a lot? I am about to upgrade my kitchen and I love this look but I currently have light flooring which shows everything and I know how dirty it gets- so using a dark rug would hide those spills but that's probably not the best. Is there a simple way to keep beautiful rugs clean in the kitchen?
