How to Warm Up Modern Style
First off, let me be clear about terminology. I use the term modern very loosely. Here I refer to it loosely to encompass an aesthetic that embraces clean lines and economy of ornamentation. I am not being strictly literal. If you are unclear about whether your room is modern or contemporary read these ways to distinguish between modern and contemporary interiors.
Yet, it is the very lack of ornamentation and expression of structure in modern homes that can feel impersonal. There-in lies the clue to warming it up. It all comes down to layering in some warmth and personality. A departure from the strict minimal interpretation. This shift is symbolic of the times we live in where we celebrate personal expression and multiculturalism.
Here are some ideas to warm up your room without losing the crisp clean lines you were drawn to, and how to re-personalize your modern decor.
2. Add texture.Cold hard surfaces like these stone and glass walls beg to be balanced with some softness. A deep pile or heavily textured rug will add some yumminess (also note the use of rustic wood again).Texture is also your best ally if you find your modern space has the inherent problems with acoustics in an open plan concept. Sound transfers from one area to another, echoes, and a feeling of cavernous noisiness is abated by adding lots of soft texture. These fluffy orbs hanging from the ceiling along with the rug work well to absorb sound vibration.
3. Show your history.Look to you family heritage (or storage locker) to find ways to put the person back into your personal decor. Those family legacy pieces might add just the right note to soften the look. Do you have some pieces in storage that could add to the mix?If not, oriental carpets are very popular right now. Go for one with a fringed edge for a greater softening effect. Fringes on rugs are coming back.
6. Introduce tension. The oversized artwork against the low-slung modular furniture creates tension and interest enlivening this space. Don’t be afraid to go big with your artwork if you love it. The result will be one-of-a-kind and exciting.Another way to play off the modern lines with traditional art.Add personality, history, and visual interest with traditional art.
7. Be sure to add some curves. Too many harsh angles can be rigid and cold. Balance them with soft lines and organic curves to temper the effect. Round poufs or ottomans, circular shaped pendant lighting help, but also look for more organic lines like you see here in this rug. Artwork could work as well if you find a piece with soft flowing lines. The result will be more relaxed. The fluid pattern in this rug is ideal.More about what they teach us in design school about introducing curves.
1. Introduce wood - the more rustic or close to its original form the better. This one addition will go a long way to warm up your home and relax the vibe.Wood accents like these bar chairs are a great place to start but coffee tables and fireplace mantles are a good place to add a rustic touch. This will go a long way to relax the rigid lines. Read about some surprising ways knotty wood has re-entered modern homes
