In my neck of the woods, believe it or not, the lumber at Home Depot was considerably better than the lumber I could get at our local lumber yard. When it comes to nuts and bolts, tools, concrete mix, drywall, insulation, caulking, etc., their stock is just as good as anyone else's. I also bought towel bars, tile, and other finish items there too. It you want anything fancy and expensive, they can order it for you. One thing I would stay away from is their paint. The Behr paint is pretty low quality. I joke that I built the Home Depot house because while building my house, I bet I was at Home Depot daily. Everyone there knows me by name LOL.
If you are going to purchase anything over $1,500, sign up at the pro desk and you will get significant discounts. Make sure you ask any of the salespeople to send your purchase to the "Bid Desk." I received at least a 15% discount on items and up to 40% on some things like my windows and some flooring.
