I'm glad to hear that granite is on the decline. I'm so tired of seeing that. I do live in a rural area, so it's still pretty popular, but I'm not be convinced to not do it on the next remodel. I'd like to go for an elegant modern farmhouse look.

I personally have an affinity for natural stone. While I am in agreement of the trend away from busy granite patterns, I dislike the high resin content and in-organic patterns of most quartz. For a light counter I prefer quartzite for light colored countertops, because it has the feel of marble with the durability of granite. I prefer an un-oiled soapstone for dark countertops because of it's antimicrobial properties and it's warmth in what would otherwise be cold feeling with black granite or quartz. I am all onboard for moving away from white painted cabinets which are difficult to maintain. While I love the elegant look of gray painted cabinets and they are a bit more forgiving than white, I'm not a fan of painted cabinets because of their inherrent lack of durability. I'm a huge fan of lime washed white oak because of its natural yet light and airy feel. Because it's not a flat finish it hides scuffs and scratches much better than any painted surface. While this combination is more costly it pays off in the long run because of it's timeless appeal and it's durability.
