2. Glossy Green Tile Envelops a Wet Room Area
Who lives here: Hannah and Ryan Hamburger; their daughter, Maya
Location: Winnetka suburb of Chicago
Eliminating a fireplace in the living room downstairs helped give homeowners Hannah and Ryan Hamburger their dream master bathroom. The fireplace had a three-floor chimney that extended from the basement up through the master closet. Removing that chimney and closet freed up space for the new master bath. “It took up so much space, so it was an easy choice. It allowed us to have both a shower and bathtub,” Hannah says.
The generously sized walk-in shower area features a freestanding tub. The walls and ceiling are encased with a glamorous glossy green glazed ceramic subway tile. The floor features marble scalloped tile. The couple plan to seal the marble floor tile every year.

After: A crisp white double vanity now sits beside the tub-shower area. “The bathroom is everything we really wanted,” Hannah says. “That was a big transition. The master bath was not really a master bath.”

3. Blue, White and Wood Master Bath With Modern Rustic Appeal
Who lives here: Jessica Hoenes, owner of Found Home & Design; her husband, Matt; and their daughter, Ellie, and son, Parker
Location: Glencoe, Illinois
Architect: Lesa Rizzolo of L.A. Rizzolo Architects
General contractor: Neil Fortunato of Green Building Technologies
Jessica and Matt Hoenes waited about two years before updating their master bathroom. They replaced a big bathtub (at left in the next photo) with a large walk-in shower and created the arched cove above the vanity. The couple worked with architect Lesa Rizzolo, whom they found on Houzz, on the design plans. “We used ideabooks to collaborate,” Jessica says. “Lesa helped us with our master bedroom and closet structural design and drew up the plans we used when updating our master bath.”

Before: This is the master bathroom that previous owners added sometime in the 1990s. “It was lovely but needed a face-lift and there was an issue with waterproofing in the shower,” Jessica says.
The couple saved money on the remodel by doing the demolition themselves, and they repurposed most of the old materials. “We found homes for any usable material, even down to nice pieces of wood. We tried to reduce as much waste as possible,” Jessica says.

After: Pictured here is the couple’s spacious walk-in shower, where they used subway tile on the walls and hexagonal tiles on the floor. “We kept it classic with the shower tile,” Jessica says. “By using oversize subway tiles with some texture, it captures light throughout the day in different ways and has a wavy texture that’s nice. It was another way to save on the budget.”
The new vanity and cement tile floor give the master bath modern rustic appeal. “We splurged on the vanity, plumbing and floor and kept the shower tile simple,” Jessica says. “We were able to reuse pocket doors and lighting fixtures. There was some give and take in order to stay on budget.”
She expects the floor to age gracefully. “We wanted to do cement tile and pull in a lot of pattern. As that ages, even in a few years, the white starts to patina and you’ll see the qualities of the cement,. We want to make it look like it could have been there originally in the house.”

Who lives here: Laura Kitsos, owner of Gem Jewelry Boutique; Michael Mariottini, a general contractor; their sons, Noah and Ben
Location: Oak Park, Illinois
Laura Kitsos and Michael Mariottini’s two-story 19th-century home was in rough shape when they bought it, and they spent two years on a thoughtful renovation to bring the interior back to life. Kitsos used photos she found on Houzz for inspiration during the process and while designing their new master suite.
Everything in the master bathroom was custom-built. The couple found rectangular slabs of marble and used them for the floor and walls. The vanity counter is a marble remnant from a stone shop.

The couple added a walk-in shower (just visible in front of the tub) and repurposed the tub. “The claw-foot tub is original to the house. We ended up building the bathroom around it,” Kitsos says. The couple repainted the outside of the tub but didn’t need to reglaze the inside. Its dark exterior contrasts with the surrounding marble walls.

The Shorts repurposed a vintage dresser found on Craigslist as their vanity. The custom countertops, made to look like concrete, were fabricated by A&B Granicrete Cincinnati, and the two square mirrors are framed with reclaimed barn wood. Wood shiplap distressed by Amy Carr and Christie Wallace of Salvage Sisters adorns the walls throughout the space.

Josh and Mary Beth Tatum relied on Houzz for design ideas and inspiration when building their family’s bayside home. “I used Houzz to home in on my particular design aesthetic,” Mary Beth says. “I was then able to further streamline and categorize my thoughts through the ideabooks.”
In the couple’s master bathroom, their big splurge was the freestanding tub. The double French doors lead to a screened-in porch.

Who lives here: Bill and Elise Fox; their sons, Jack and Leo
Location: Downers Grove, Illinois
Architect-builder: Oakley Home Builders
Elise and Bill Fox designed their family’s new bright and airy home in a suburb of Chicago by turning to Houzz for inspiration. “A lot of times I’d think, ‘How would a modern bathroom look?’ and narrow down my choices,” Elise says.
In the couple’s previous master bathroom, an outdated single-basin vanity was situated between the tub and toilet. They had a new custom walnut double vanity installed and the entire space was transformed to include classic elements that relate to the rest of the home. These include black interior doors with brass hardware, walls painted a bright white and trim painted black for contrast. A lively green chevron cement floor tile energizes the space.
