Rocking Chairs: Not Just for Nana
Ah rocking chairs - one may think of knitting and nervous cats at first. But once you sit in one, it's so much fun to enjoy rocking and relaxing. The origins of the earliest rocking chairs go back to the early 18th century and were built in North America and England. Over the years, there's been a rocker for everyone - there are comb-backed, wicker, bentwood Thonets, Mission-style Stickleys, handcrafted Adirondack twig versions, molded plastic Eames rockers, comfy contemporary upholstered styles for new moms, aluminum Emeco Hudson Chairs and even that inexpensive stylish little rattan guy from IKEA.
A few things I realized while putting together this ideabook:
1. If you aren't a hermit and have a great view, get two rockers so you can enjoy it with a loved one.
2. There are plenty of rockers for nurseries to choose from that can go in a child's room as they grow up - you can bet they'll be dragging the same chair they were rocking in as an infant off to their first apartments.
3. Architects, interior designers and photo stylists love rockers. Check out how stylish they look in the photos below.
Oh there's more, but I'll leave you to reading about a variety of rockers below.

I can't think of a more perfect spot for a pair of rockers.
This antique Boston Rocker fits right into a fresh modern space.
This Adirondack twig style rocker brings a bit of the woods from the view outside into this modern space.
This chair is perfect for a nursery, and it can grow up with a girl through her teenage years and into adulthood.
This shot of my neighbor's house with the Samuel Mockbee addition is one of my favorite spots. The part of the house you see is the original dairy barn structure, and the modern molded rockers let visitors know this house tour is going to be anything but typical.
This Mission Style rocker gives a dose of dark wood to this light room.
I am SO jealous of this guy - what a perfect spot for a good rockin'!
Oh but wait, I might like this spot just as much if not more! These traditional fit right into coastal style.
What better spot for a rocker than in front of a warm fire on a cold night?
I'm noticing a pattern here - great porch + great view + rockers = wonderfully styled architectural photography!
See what I mean?
The front porches of Oak Bluffs are where residents spend the majority of their time, rocking, watching the tourists go by, and visiting with neighbors.
More Oak Bluffs front porch action.
