Contemporary Living Room, San Francisco

There is always abit of pressure when designing a dream home for any client. But when a couple approached me to take control of a new home construction already in progress, the pressure was ten fold. At the time I was brought on board, construction was right before inspections for rough electrical and plumbing. Two previous designers had not provided any designs or guidance for the new 3,400 square foot home and I had only four weeks to design the entire interior which included an overall space plan, color scheme development and selection of cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, furniture, lighting and accessories among other items. The overall design concept blends the clients’ Asian Indian heritage with their love of contemporary and modern design. The clients gave us free reign on the project and it gave us the chance to create unexpected design elements that added great dimension to the interiors. One area is the formal, sunken living room with its New Zealand merino wool carpet, custom imported Italian wool upholstered slipper chairs, chocolate brown leather daybed and low profile sofa that all contrast with the Southeast Asian antiques. The focal point of the room are the dramatic 11 foot tall window panels that are a contemporary twist on what looks like traditional sari fabric. The panels are constructed of two Robert Allen fabrics: Fenway Park in Cider (an almost curry powder tone) makes up 3/4th of each panel and Gandolfo in Nutmeg brings a striped pattern to ground the entire look. Because it is a formal space and the windows have a strong Southern exposure almost all year round, the space would only be used a few times a year. Thinking outside the box, the idea of a movable fabric wall first came to mind. The final solution was a series of four, un-pleated panels that hang from hospital track hidden behind crown molding. The look is dramatic and unique.
