DHD Architecture and Interior Design
Originally designed by Delano and Aldrich in 1917, this building served as carriage house to the William and Dorothy Straight mansion several blocks away on the Upper East Side of New York. With practically no original detail, this relatively humble structure was reconfigured into something more befitting the client’s needs. To convert it for a single family, interior floor plates are carved away to form two elegant double height spaces. The front façade is modified to express the grandness of the new interior. A beautiful new rear garden is formed by the demolition of an overbuilt addition. The entire rear façade was removed and replaced. A full floor was added to the roof, and a newly configured stair core incorporated an elevator.

Large victorian three-story brick exterior home idea in Philadelphia

In Detail Interiors
As the only bath in the downstairs of this historic 100+ year old house, many challenges were presented to the designers from the start. The bath had to meet dual purposes. First and foremost, durability to withstand daily activities of three active teenagers and their friends was a must. Second, it needed to exhibit the elegance of an entertaining “powder room”. In addition, the material selections reflecting the eclectic nature of their Bayou heritage was essential to keep the homeowners personal stamp vivid.
With conceptual designs complete, the execution challenges began. Demolition revealed cast iron pipes interfering with the placement of the wall mount faucets, which were integral to the design. The wall was furred 6” to accommodate the valves. The changes in this wall afforded the ability to recess the extra-deep medicine half in the new wall, half extending out. Thus, providing the base structure for the fly-out shelves. Completing this feature, glass mosaic tiles wrap the furred wall, floor to ceiling, finishing off nicely into the full wall of travertine tile.
A built-in closet was removed to make way for a linen cabinet. Translucent resin panels used in lieu of glass doors shield daily items from total exposure. Cherry cabinets and weathered copper fixtures tie this bath to the traditional styling of the old home. Yet, a granite vessel sink, mosaic tiles and contemporary light fixtures add eclectic flair into the space.
Plumbing and stud location were potential pitfalls to the location of the mosaic-backed niches in the shower as well. Therefore the surrounding walls were furred to fit the new tub perfectly, and allow the niches to be centered on the space. A romantic glow of candles in the lower niche transforms this fast-paced teen bath into a calming retreat in an instant.

The Emery (Zusag) HouseElmhurst, IllinoisArchitect Walter Burley Griffin designed the William H. Emery House in 1902. The house represents one of the earliest examples of Prairie School architecture and was the first significant commission for the young Griffin, who at the time was employed in the office of Frank Lloyd Wright. Although designed early in Griffin’s career, the Emery House exhibits a mature and fully developed Prairie School vocabulary. Continuous bands of glass and a low gabled roof with wide overhanging eaves give the building the strong horizontality of this midwestern architectural style. Inside, the house has textured plaster walls and ceilings decorated with bands of wood trim, built-in cabinetry, art glass, and ornamental wood screening that is characteristic of Prairie style residences.Alterations and a general lack of maintenance have led to considerable deterioration of this landmark structure. The current owners retained Eifler & Associates to assist in the restoration of the Emery house, which was completed in 2005. The restoration program included removal of a later addition, restoration of the original raised terrace, replacement of the existing roof structure, refurbishment of the mechanical system and replacement of the electrical system. On the interior, work includes restoration of the woodwork, plaster finishes and decorative light fixtures as well as extensive rehabilitation of the kitchen and bathrooms.

This East Austin house is both an exhibition space and a home to its curators. At the street front, the façade of the 100 year-old home is relatively unchanged and matches the character of the surrounding neighborhood. Inside, the intersection of old / new construction, public / private zones, art / life creates a layered experience that pushes the suburban form towards a more urban typology. When the gallery is not in use, the living room and dining room spill out into the public spaces. Large pocket doors close off the private spaces during gallery hours to divide home from exhibit. A pecan tree at the heart of the site informs the footprint of the 900 sf addition. The gallery wraps around the resulting courtyard and main gallery entrance. Vestiges of the historic home punctuate the contemporary interior and remind visitors of the intrinsic value of the old materials. Salvaged long leaf pine used at the floors and walls brings warmth to the entry, and is seen again at the courtyard soffit.

Situated in a pocket of classic Oak woodlands in Portola valley, the site of this home addition had partial views of the incredible landscape below, but lacked physical access to its full splendor. Analogous to a fallen log, the addition extends out from the original home to inhabit the slope, laying host to a new and unexpected habitable micro-environment. Gently cascading down the hillside, it echoes the natural slope of the site with a long, broad flowing stair lined with panoramic windows to capture views of the valley. As it terminates, a deck is laid forth and seemingly slips under the curtain wall beyond, spilling out onto a grassy play area and forming a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Morning and evening light filtering through the trees create a dappled light that plays on the building and blends the house into the wooded hillside. Nature and nurture, soil and sun, is reinforced through all materials. The consistent color of the exterior panels forms a warm canvas for the light cast through the trees to create a brilliant exhibition of light and shadow that dances across the East and West façade as the sun moves throughout the day. The obscured forms of the surrounding trees dematerialize the house, which is consumed into the hillside. On the inside, faced with horizontally laid Eucalyptus, “cut-outs” in the cabinetry create small, warm apertures in the West façade where dramatic evening sun lights up the house and signals, “Its dinner time!”
