This home at the back sits below grade, which means the bottom of the kitchen window has the garden grade outside. The kitchen was totally gutted and because of it being below grade we had pipes running on the face of the existing stone interior walls. I pulled out the depth of the base cabinets to allow the plumbing to be hidden, then also ran wainscoting to also hide any electrical and plumbing.
As we had no ability to put in upper cabinets the storage was all in the base. I designed cabinets to fit in a pull out pantry as well as storage for the toaster. The microwave was installed at a child friendly height as the home is used by all members of this extended family.
I used a bead-board on the ceiling which then was finished in a high gloss paint, which reflects the flowers growing in the garden.
The small sitting area combines storage for music as well as books, with the sky lights above this makes it a sunny area in a normally dark under grade area.
The raised counter for sitting was placed on the living room side keeping guests out of the cooks way. A vinyl floating floor was used as well as a mix of walnut and painted cabinets.

His and her pedestal sinks take up less space in a small corner of the master bath. Even without counter space, Gayle and Gary manage to keep daily essentials at hand, thanks to the built-in medicine cabinets. As Gayle states, "[We] assign places for things, so there's a place to put it away", leaving minimal opportunities for clutter.

RIKB Design Build
This project involved re-working the existing interior layout to give the home a new, open concept floor plan, breaking up the feeling of four separate rooms on the first floor. We met our clients’ needs through the following:
We built a designated area for their three kids to enjoy snacks and do their homework after school.
There are three regular cooks in the home, so an open space was created that was suitable for 2-3 chefs to work comfortably.
Because the clients love to look up new recipe and meal ideas, a separate desk area for their computer, with internet access, was created.
We incorporated clients’ love of the bead board look within the cabinetry.
We incorporated an accessible and aesthetically pleasing three shelf built-in space within the island to store cookbooks and other belongings.
Improved previous interior lighting by adding three hanging lights over the island, updating ceiling lighting and building French doors in the dining room space.
Made the kitchen open to the living room so family and guests can continuously interact.
Spice storage was a concern, so we built a four row pull-out spice rack near the stove.
New kitchen appliances were creatively incorporated that were not originally there.
A total of four interior walls were removed to create the open concept floor plan. We faced a constraint when we had to install a structural LVL beam since we removed a load bearing wall. We also met design challenges, such as adding pantry storage, natural lighting, spice storage, trash pull-outs and enough space to comfortably fit at least three chefs in the kitchen at a time, within the existing footprint of the house.
The clients had waited 11 years for a new kitchen and they didn’t want to hold back on what they really wanted. The clients finally received a creative and practical kitchen, while still staying within their budget.

Upon walking into this powder bathroom, you are met with a delicate patterned wallpaper installed above blue bead board wainscoting. The angled walls and ceiling covered in the same wallpaper making the space feel larger. The reclaimed brick flooring balances out the small print wallpaper. A wall-mounted white porcelain sink is paired with a brushed brass bridge faucet, complete with hot and cold symbols on the handles. To finish the space out we installed an antique mirror with an attached basket that acts as storage in this quaint powder bathroom.

Our Deep Beaded Beadboard planks allow for customization to suit your project needs. The picture clearly shows the versatility of beadboard and the elegance that can be created by it.
The price listed is the cost of one 8ft length of Elite BeadBoard Plank, in primed MDF, 3/8" thick by 8 1/4" wide which may be cut down to make stiles. This is the profile that we use for our Bead Board Kits, cut in one third to a length of 32". When cut in half, the stiles would be 48" high to be used for taller applications.

This is a primitive Maine 1720 farmhouse that we did 10 years ago. It was in great original condition so we tried to make the kitchen look like it had been there when the house was built. We tried to make it look like it was carp[enter made with a more primitive style than a skilled cabinetmaker would have done. More primitive details, plank doors, simple feet, moldings and hardware were very much a part of the design. All the appliances are concealed, and it has a soapstone sink and hand scraped curly maple counter tops.
This is one of the most published kitchens I have done.
