The sofas and armchairs in the comfortable living area were chosen to complement each other, rather than match, for visual interest. This is a flexible mix of seating; comfy but uncluttered for family lounging, and able to be reconfigured for entertaining. Seven people can sit happily together, with the wooden storage stools pulled into use and the soft desk stool creating an extra perch or, with the tray on top, serving as a useful side table. The long, generous sofa actually helps the room feel bigger —small sofas can make a modest space appear even smaller — while a large rug anchors this section, subtly defining the living area as separate from the dining space. Its teal blue colour brings warmth to the neutral scheme without standing out boldly and the colour is repeated on the charming cloud shelves above. The coffee table provides another useful surface for drinks or books, echoing the long shape of the sofa without dominating the floor space or reading as a centrepiece.

CAPITAL BUILDING
This open space area was divided up by the use of split levels yet managed to retain its open plan feel and sense of space. The use of the timber textures in a variety of ways against the clean white base ensured that the space was connected and balanced. This resulted in an airy, open yet cosy space.

In the family area, furnishings were kept simple but with strong styling lines, a bright red retro styled sofa with chaise end and a rug together with a statement Flos spun floor lamp and bright artworks, warm up the area. A limited palette of greys, creams, blacks and reds added drama to the space.

The "parlour" is the first room that you see when you enter the home. The wood burning fireplace has been beautifully refurbished. The furniture and area rug are all original to the space. They were cleaned and they look like they belong in this space.

If you have little space in open plan living, it is important to zone the space and define the separate areas. This can be achieved through a rug under the dining table or a sideboard behind a sofa.

Nicola Interiors
For this open-concept home, we created a contemporary look with modern farmhouse touches using vibrant blues and greens mixed with an organic stone fireplace and exposed ceiling beams.
We integrated subtle but powerful chevron prints, which paired nicely with the clean, tailored furnishings.
Overall, this design proves that fun and vibrant can merge with neutral and sophisticated -- which offered our clients the best of both worlds.

This room is all about colour and how to make an eclectic mix of inherited and new pieces work together.
The table is mid-century modern teak, the couch is new and the love seat was inherited. The sideboards were inherited from family and I updated them with a chocolate spray laquer and blue milk glass handles. The lamps were a bargain find at HomeSense. And the artwork is a mix of prints and originals as well as a couple of inherited pieces. The inspiration for the colour scheme came from the Sumak area rug.
