CIRCA 1904, this modest Edwardian terrace house was restored to provide an open plan living space integrated from front to back. A significant circulation re-organisation enabled significant additional floorspace, quality light and ventilation to be created within the existing envelope of the terrace house. The challenge was to increase the natural light into the existing cellular room arrangement. Our solution, was to relocate the stiars from the centre of the house and align them with the party wall. The exposed brickwork, rich with the patina of use is celebated like an archeological dig. Where once a chimney stood, now a shaft of light flows. The long steel and glass sky-roof echoes the former breezeway it replaced.

The Stacked Brick Extension is a ground floor wrap around extension to a small Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington.
The original house had an odd layout, with the main bathroom on the ground floor at the back of the kitchen and no bathroom on the first floor. The ceiling height was very low on the ground floor creating a very unwelcoming kitchen and there was no connection with the garden.
The extension creates a sociable open plan kitchen diner with sliding doors opening onto a new patio. We lowered the floor to create better ceiling height in the kitchen and opened up the pitched roof internally to create even more volume and define the dining space.
The extension is constructed from a pale yellow brick to complement the traditional yellow stock brick of the original house, but lend a more contemporary feel. The bricks are stack bonded to create a geometric pattern. The garden and patio are all constructed form the same brickwork which helps the spaces flow together and gives a greater sense of space and continuity in the small garden.
Internally a simple palette of materials includes exposed Ash rafters, Birch face plywood to form a dining room bench, dark green kitchen cabinets and grey floor tiles.

The extension, situated half a level beneath the main living floors, provides the addition space required for a large modern kitchen/dining area at the lower level and a 'media room' above. It also generally connects the house with the re-landscaped garden and terrace.

Seen from the street, the house displays a clean and contemporary form. However, the painted bevel siding, wood trim and overall scale allow the house to be at home with its more traditional neighbors. The south facing shed roof houses both photo-voltaic and hot water panels to maximize renewable energy use.

A contemporary bushland house on the Yarra River, designed for a young family that love the connection to the outdoors & entertaining
This Warrandyte site occupies a prime location on a stunning bushland perch above the Yarra River. Covered in trees, with restricted access and falling steeply to the river it was not without its challenges however, including Environmental and Bushfire Overlays (BAL29).
The views, orientation, topography and context have very much generated the form and materiality of the house as the dual wings of the house slide with the landscape to articulate privacy for neighbouring properties whilst also maximising views, daylight and access to external entertaining spaces.
Twin butterfly roofs lift the eaves to catch daylight from every direction and enhance the sense of space and connection to outdoors whilst a glazed circulation slot creates a dramatic but efficient connection between the two forms.
A generous roof terrace with external fireplace and arbour allow for contemporary outdoor entertaining whilst allowing the natural terrain of the site to fall below, relatively untouched.

The design of this new four bedroom house provides a strong contemporary presence but also maintains a very private face to the street. Composed of simple elements, the ground floor is largely glass overhung by the first floor balconies framed in white, creating deep shadows at both levels. Adjustable white louvred screens to all balconies control sunlight and privacy, while maintaining the connection between inside and out.
Following a minimalist aesthetic, the building is almost totally white internally and externally, with small splashes of colour provided by furnishings and the vivid aqua pool that is visible from most rooms.
Parallel with the central hallway is the stair, seemingly cut from a block of white terrazzo. It glows with light from above, illuminating the sheets of glass suspended from the ceiling forming the balustrade.
The view from the central kitchen and family living areas is dominated by the pool. The long north facing terrace and garden become part of the house, multiplying the light within these rooms. The first floor contains bedrooms and a living area, all with direct access to balconies to the front or side overlooking the pool, which also provide shade for the ground floor windows.

A newly renovated terrace in St Peters needed the final touches to really make this house a home, and one that was representative of it’s colourful owner. This very energetic and enthusiastic client definitely made the project one to remember.
With a big brief to highlight the clients love for fashion, a key feature throughout was her personal ‘rock’ style. Pops of ‘rock' are found throughout and feature heavily in the luxe living areas with an entire wall designated to the clients icons including a lovely photograph of the her parents. The clients love for original vintage elements made it easy to style the home incorporating many of her own pieces. A custom vinyl storage unit finished with a Carrara marble top to match the new coffee tables, side tables and feature Tom Dixon bedside sconces, specifically designed to suit an ongoing vinyl collection.
Along with clever storage solutions, making sure the small terrace house could accommodate her large family gatherings was high on the agenda. We created beautifully luxe details to sit amongst her items inherited which held strong sentimental value, all whilst providing smart storage solutions to house her curated collections of clothes, shoes and jewellery. Custom joinery was introduced throughout the home including bespoke bed heads finished in luxurious velvet and an excessive banquette wrapped in white Italian leather. Hidden shoe compartments are found in all joinery elements even below the banquette seating designed to accommodate the clients extended family gatherings.
