It's amazing how small gardens can look so great when well designed. We built this garden for Ana Sanchez owner of Germinate.
Starting at the house with the Balau hardwood deck, this was fixed using an invisible fixing method, creating a comfortable extension to the home with sofas for lounging. The detail is in the design here, with matching grey fabric sofas to blend with the grey painted bespoke slatted trellis, unifying this space. A very inviting area to sit and relax with a glass of wine after a hard days work!
Leading down to the small lawn area, height has been added with an old stock brick built wall, which we then fixed a diagonal lattice of stainless steel wire rope to train. Trachylospermum Jasminoides over. A buttress of mature ready grown clipped Taxus has been used to create a backdrop to the soft palate of planting. Purples and blues are used as an accent colour in this area, which compliments the greys on the upper deck area.

Artscape Garden Associates Ltd
This recent Artscape garden design project was for a family home near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, and included pool landscaping, a large patio area for lounging and dining, pathways and extensive planting.
Pool landscaping with porcelain surround
The main feature of the garden design is the outdoor swimming pool, installed with the luxurious poolside surround we created using porcelain paving. Porcelain pavers are extremely hardwearing, water-resistant and provides a stunning, high-end, consistent finish. The pathway linking the pool to the house uses a durable, modern dark black clay pavers by Vande Moortal which makes a striking contrast to the light toned porcelain which also complimented the modern extension.
Another feature of the pool landscaping is the premium, venetian-style trellis. This attractive design allows light and air to pass through while maintaining privacy.
Contemporary garden pool house
Artscape designed the contemporary garden pool house which was custom-built to enhance the use of the swimming pool. It features a made-to-measure changing room and plenty of dedicated storage space for towels and play equipment.
Barbecue area
Just behind the changing room is a new barbecue area which has been screened with a Corten steel trellis. Also know as weathering steel, over time this will form an attractive raw, rusty-orange, textured appearance, blending naturally with the surrounding landscape. Corten panels are very long lasting and require minimal maintenance.
Poolside planting
Pleached hornbeam trees have been planted in front of the venetian-style trellis to add extra privacy and style to the poolside setting. Hornbeam has bright green foliage in spring and summer and crisp, copper leaves in autumn. Pleaching is a sophisticated, centuries-old method of training trees to produce a narrow, formal-style hedge.
The planting scheme surrounding the pool consists mainly of soft ornamental grasses, bearded iris and purple salvias. We made sure there was an interesting combination of colour, height and texture. The borders running from the house down to the pool area have been planted with a mixture of Alliums, bright orange flowered Geum, Acers and grasses with a palette ranging from hot to cool greens.

Tile & Stone Medic
We found this fantastic example of man made tiles in a lovely church in Flyde Coast. As you can see in these images, the floor was in need of some serious restoration. The building had been undergoing renovation work and this had left the floor in a sorry state. It’s not uncommon to come across this kind of flooring and get involved as one of the last stages of internal remodelling. In some cases, the floor is only discovered as a part of these works, when surfaces that have been placed on top are removed. The combination of a change in flooring as well as other building works means that resorting the flooring is the one of the key, later stages required to achieve a fantastic, improved effect.
Offering a hard, long lasting surface that is easy to maintain, tiles have been used in all kinds of places. But while they are undoubtedly strong, that is not to say that tiled floors are never in need of a little care and attention. Even the toughest of tiles are still vulnerable to dirt and damage over a long time scale. When it comes to man made tiles such as these, there is no single process that will solve all of these problems. Depending on the exact material used, the state of it’s surface and the desired outcome we can carry out a range of cleaning and restoration services. In some cases, this is a fairly superficial clean, buff and polish. In this case, we had to go for a more thorough restoration process. This enables us to remove serious scratches by honing away a fine layer from the surface of the tile. Having revealed a fresh surface, we can then apply the most appreciate sealant to achieve your desired finish. We also take into account the expected uses of the flooring, for example the high foot traffic of this chapel would require different care and attention to that of a kitchen.
As you can see here, the tiles began a soft earthy shade of terracotta. But as soon as the restoration began, the vivid orange started to shine through. Not only does this deep restoration reveal the true beauty of these find tiles, our finishing sealers make it much easier to maintain and preserve that finish for the future.
As you can see here, there are all kinds of issues when starting out on this kind of project. While our trained, experienced team is your best bet for making the most of this kind of discovery, we do suggest you get in touch so we can work out whats feasible. In some cases, if concrete has been used to cover the tiles, or the subfloor has shifted it can be a very laborious process to get the tiles back up to scratch. Having said that, displaying an elaborate, antique floor in all its glory is not to be sniffed at and is well worth the trouble.
Naturally, each restoration project has its own quirks but we have tried and tested methods to get you the best possible results. Firstly, we will carefully remove any covering material with minute care and attention, force must be very carefully applied to remove tough substances such as concrete without damaging the delicate tiles beneath. Once any contaminates have been meticulously removed we can turn our attention to the tiles themselves. In some cases we may need to carry out work to remove sealant or scratches to the surface. This is not to forget the grout between the tiles which is generally a softer, more porous material. If necessary we will carry out work to recolour the grout before sealing and protecting the whole floor to achieve a stunning finish and long lasting protection.

It is a contemporary ‘farm style compound’ with the main house accommodated in a ‘barn’ structure, the garages & workshops (steel- & woodworking workshops for the tinkering owner) in adjoining ‘sheds’ and the entrance & staircase housed in a semi-klinker ‘silo’ structure. A lap pool to the North of the barn act as a passive cooling device in summer, by cooling the warm summer winds from the North-East down through the evaporation of the pool water, and drawing the hot air from the ‘barn’ through large apertures facing the pool to the North & the pasture to the South. Triangular windows in the gables can be opened to draw out further hot air rising to the ceiling level inside the house. Proper insulation materials & methods for the roof, walls & floors, together with double glazing results in a cosy & warm interior. The lap pool is also an analogy of a drinking trough for the cows which used to roam the land and found on the farm before it was developed, hankering to its past, but off course also is just a swimming pool, in which the kids can play or train in for swimming galas.
This house is designed to self-sufficient and ‘off-the-grid’ in the end, through the incorporation of many ideas & systems. Sustainable elements include items like a rain water harvesting system with galvanized tanks on the outside in feeling with the farm style vernacular, grey water recycling for garden irrigation, solar water heating- & photo voltaic (electricity generation) on the roof, the use of recycled materials obtained from demolished buildings & bridges at the time, and low-water-low maintenance gardens, indigenous to the area.

Dale Cohen Designstudio
Dale was chosen to participate in the 2013 Hampton Designer Showhouse, sponsored by Traditional Home Magazine, because she has built a reputation for precise, elegant, and livable design work in Manhattan. The challenge of the showhouse, essentially a blank canvas with an imaginary client, was not beyond her. The room she was given is the Terrace Level Lounge; she chose a program to embrace a burgeoning art collection, and devise areas of repose to enjoy the work. And Ms. Cohen’s early training as a painter and photographer clearly are clearly a great asset in this particular room. Her method is to analyze the room as an architectural proposition. A Yale Architectural School graduate, she is able to cast a few intelligent moves to make the room a stage rather than a hallway. Creating a platform for her creative collaboration and designing the Monumental Lantern with artist John Houshmand.
The seating areas are a series of compressed compositions with shapes and forms of chairs, a Minotti sofa, a Valerie Goodman Gallery coffee table, and the Holland and Sherry geometric throw pillows that evoke the early modernist paintings of Jean Arp. Accented by ceiling panels covered in a Maharam wallpaper. Her next big move was enrolling the work of artist and furniture maker John Houshmand. Ms. Cohen thrives on creative collaboration and designing the Monumental Lantern that with Houshmand, that she boldly placed in one entire corner of the room. Few designers would welcome a giant rough sawn luminaire but Ms. Cohen’s early apprenticeship with Richard Serra is evident in this wonderful juxtaposition of scale. Ms. Cohen’s reputation as a brave designer has been established with the inclusion of Houshmand’s piece.
Ms. Cohen’s method is to analyze the room as an architectural proposition. A Yale Architectural School graduate, she is able to cast a few intelligent moves to make the room a stage rather than a hallway. The stairway was divided into two events, one behind a scrim and the other revealed. This gave the sitting area a theatrical backdrop as well as choreographing a Hollywood-style entrance for the visitor walking down the stairs. In fact Ms. Cohen uses a series of fabric backdrops throughout the space to denote different spatial conditions.
The color palette, if said aloud, is the prototypical Hamptons beach house cheery; though Ms. Cohen’s take is altogether different. With a sea blue as her base, she treats the envelope of the space with tinted whites and grays, and just as you are comfortable with this resolve she infuses the space with drops of chartreuse. The optic shock of an electric green is a sign of strength in Ms. Cohen’s tool box. The result is a perfect balance of whimsy and sophistication.
Whimsy, bravery, and compositional sophistication will not be evident or sufficient without Ms. Cohen’s razor sharp rigor. Her attention to detail is what makes one want to sit in the Fritz Hansen chair, under the reading light, with cashmere throw at its side. Ms. Cohen’s embrace of the luxury of detail is what makes for valuable moments in the design world and what sets her work apart.
