5. Pullout work surface. Kitchens sometimes incorporate pullout cutting boards to create extra counter space — why not have a pullout desk? Fully extended, it offers plenty of room to work on a laptop, but when you need the space, it quickly slides away.

Tuck away an undercounter table. Laptops are now commonplace in our lives, with more and more of us using them as the primary computer. For small interiors, where a kitchen or dining room has to double up as a workspace, consider a pullout, breakfast-bar-style table built into a kitchen unit. This can be used for eating at and working on, then can be easily slid back into place when not in use. If you’re planning a new kitchen, look for companies that factor something like this into their designs. Alternatively, commission a carpenter to customize an existing cupboard to make space for one.

10. Home office. This clever pullout surface can serve as both kitchen table and workstation.

We’re also seeing more built-in desks, and I just love this one. It pulls out from under the kitchen countertop. It might have been planned as a work area or a desk, but either way it works well, along with the built-in seating, for a multifunctional space.

Slide this way. Consider installing a space-smart pullout desk like this one. Here, a bench built alongside provides seating, or just pull up a chair. A mobile free-standing lamp provides the light.
