Art Deco Rugs - The Deco period was an international design movement from 1920's to 1940's. It produced a mix of many different styles borrowing design influences from neoclassical, constructivism, cubism, modernism and art nouveau. The Art Deco movement led to the evolution of the carpet revolution. Antique carpets made before the 1920's, especially the more refined oriental carpets, did not compliment the modern decor and Art Deco furnishings. A new style was taking shape that reflected this movement. Carpet design evolved from floral to angular elegance with modern, abstract and figurative motifs. The color palate is both bold and muted with interesting juxtapositions of light and dark. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural with a luxurious feel. Such characteristics come together to create the aesthetics of a large swath of vintage rugs. Such legendary artists as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Klee, Paul and Dorn shaped this evolution. Paule Leleu the daughter of Jules Leleu of the famed House of Leleu was a talented creator whose vision also contributed to these highly collectible rugs.
In the rug trade, term Art Deco or Deco (for short) applies to European and certain Chinese carpets that reflect the new movements in modern European decorative arts during the first third of the twentieth century.
Art Deco Rugs are characterized by experimentation with bold colors, angular lines, and the omission of heavy ornamentation. Over the past few years, the demand for art deco rugs and art deco carpets has grown tremendously. Partly fueled by the revival of mid-century modernist interior design trends, Art deco rugs come from various regions in Europe but some of the most coveted pieces are the art deco carpets or rugs that were made in France, China and Scandinavia (which are really mid-century modern but when it comes to interior design the term art deco does fit in well). Since a rug need to be 80 years old or older to be called antique, in only a few more years, the art deco vintage rug could be be referred to as Antique Art Deco rugs.

Antique Chinese Deco Rug, Origin: China, Circa: Early 20th Century. Here is an exciting and appealing antique Oriental carpet. an antique Art Deco rug that was designed and woven in China during the early years of the twentieth century. Heavily informed by the aesthetic inclinations of the Art Deco period, this unique carpet is a compelling and thought-provoking example. A scalloped Purple encloses a Light Green sand field on this exquisitely subtle and restrained antique Chinese Art Deco. At first the field appears empty or open, but it is actually covered by a tone-on-tone design of scrolls and cloud-bands emanating inward from the outer edges. In their sinuous rhythms they echo the scalloped forms of the border and continue its visual effects across the carpet in a more subdued manner. This carpet testifies to the masterful design sensibilities of Chinese weavers as they made the transition into the modern world. The Art Deco movement had an outside influence on the world of art and design, and some of the most important qualities and characteristics of that movement may be found in this fine rug.

Yong B Signature Rug, 6'x9'by Christopher Fareed Design Studios

The Signature collection is comprised of some of Fareed's most modern and striking designs, emphasizing experimentation over convention. While the production of his rugs is done according to age-old methods, his experimental creative process allows him a means for departure from the conventional parameters of rug designing. Fareed doesn't enjoy creating sterile, unremarkable pieces. Just as important to the formation of his notion of artistic integrity is the acknowledgement that anything pure and noble is all the more ripe for corruption. As an artist attending university in London during his formative years, he invariably began to see new, radical forms of modern expression, including graffiti, punk music and the Neo-Pop movement. To him, this experience introduced him to a new type of culture, a transient culture characterized as transient, nihilistic, and sometimes even self-destructive. For him, the implications of these new forms of expression were clear: nothing is meant to last forever. This mantra, a far cry from the romantic notions his predecessors echoed in their craft, was the heart of his methodology. In our mass culture of consumerism, celebrity worship, instant gratification, and a conspicuous obsession with material wealth, still some traditional mediums have managed to survive the onslaught of pop-culture iconography. This all the more deepened his fascination with a medium long considered traditional, while forcing him to reconsider the nature of creativity in the context of textiles, an area of art with which very little had improved upon or changed for some time.
Drawing inspiration from natural landscapes, abstract shapes and concepts, bridging the conventional and the abstract, these rugs will transform your space with all of the elegance and charm. With a distinct urban and cosmopolitan feel, these rugs play a vital everyday role, not only as an expression of individuality, but as part of the shelter that sustains us. All Christopher Fareed Signature Rugs use only the purest New Zealand Wool, or masterfully blended with Banana Silk in some cases, to guarantee a top level of quality and durability. Child labor free and made with biodegradable, all natural materials. 6 to 8 weeks lead time.

$15,000
Free Shipping
77215 Antique Chinese Pictorial Baotou Rug Bai Niao Chao Feng Rug, 06'00 x 11'06.
Chinese Pictorial Baotou rugs, originating from the city of Baotou in Inner Mongolia, China, are renowned for their intricate designs and narrative themes. Crafted using traditional methods passed down through generations, these rugs feature vivid depictions of Chinese folklore, history, and nature, woven with a variety of colors and intricate patterns. Embedded with symbols of cultural significance, they serve both as decorative items in homes and as cultural artifacts, reflecting China's rich artistic heritage. Valued for their beauty, craftsmanship, and storytelling qualities, Pictorial Baotou rugs encapsulate a unique blend of artistry and tradition that has endured for centuries in Chinese society.
This exquisite hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Baotou rug unveils a captivating pictorial landscape, wherein an array of birds and botanical motifs gracefully adorn an abrashed navy blue field. The legend enshrined within this tapestry is hailed in Mandarin as 'Bai Niao Chao Feng,' meaning 'a hundred birds pay homage to the phoenix.' According to this revered tale, the phoenix, once an ordinary bird, displayed unparalleled generosity during a time of dire need in the forest. Amidst a drought that left fellow avians starving, the phoenix selflessly shared its bounty, garnering the heartfelt gratitude of every feathered inhabitant. In a touching display of appreciation, each bird contributed a plume, fashioning a resplendent coat to honor the phoenix's benevolence. Consequently hailed as the avian sovereign, the phoenix is annually feted by birds worldwide, symbolizing the profound notion that noble leadership can bestow prosperity upon all, and that perseverance and sagacity can elevate anyone to greatness.
Within the intricate weave of this masterpiece, the legend unfolds through the portrayal of two majestic phoenixes amidst a breathtaking panorama teeming with diverse avian species and verdant foliage, including pine trees, parasol trees, and plum blossoms. The rug's exquisite main border is embellished with captivating cartouches adorned with animal motifs—a menagerie of rabbits, goats, dogs, and horses—set against an enchanting backdrop of diamond lattices and intricate tree motifs. An inner guard border, adorned with an ancient fret Meander design known as leiwen or 'thunder pattern,' intertwines the wan symbol, symbolizing 'ten thousand,' with a sinuous key motif, evoking notions of enduring joy and longevity. Bathed in a color palette reminiscent of traditional Chinese aesthetics—harmonizing blues, creams, grays, and delicate touches of pink—the rug exudes an aura of timeless elegance and cultural resonance.
This resplendent Chinese Baotou rug not only epitomizes masterful craftsmanship but also serves as a testament to the profound symbolism and cultural heritage woven into its fabric. Its opulent scenery, meticulous detailing, and rich symbolism render it a treasure trove of history and tranquility, capable of infusing any interior space with an air of sophistication and grandeur.
Rendered in variegated shades of navy blue, royal blue, cobalt, indigo, ink blue, cerulean, sky blue, terra cotta, burnt orange, coral, gray, greige, taupe, camel, and peach with pink abrash with other accent colors.

The Art Deco movement had an outside influence on the world of art and design.
