In the Middle Ages, Siena was partitioned into 17 neighborhoods. Each one was represented by an unique emblem and a colorful banner. These neighborhoods developed a tradition of fierce rivalry that continues today as the Palio, a competitive bareback horse race that takes place on July 2 and August 16 every year in the city's main piazza Piazza del Campo.
The location of the Chiocciola Contrada is situated in the south-western corner of the city; traditionally, its residents worked as terracotta makers. Chiocciola's motto is With slow and deliberate steps, snail leaves the battlefield triumphant. The district's patron saints are the apostles Peter and Paul with a feast day of June 29. Chiocciola's symbol is a snail. Its colours are red and yellow, trimmed with blue.
