About Us

We are a small, second generation, family-owned design firm and have designed custom, green homes for hundreds of wonderful clients around the US for almost 40 years from our home town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Every project is totally custom so costs vary. Due to the higher quality of materials we use our homes tend to cost 15-20% more than a typical code minimum house. For example 1,200sqft homes from $250,000 to $350,000. 1,500sqft homes from $300,000 to $550,000. 1,800sqft homes from $400,000 to 600,000. 2,000sqft homes from $425,000 to $750,000. 2,500sqft homes from $500,000 to 1 million. 3,000sqft homes from $650 to 2 million. Sunlight Homes is a custom green residential design, information, resource and education company. We guide our customers through the green home building process using integrated systems and state-of-the-art green design, information and materials technology. Designers of custom, passive solar, green homes since 1975. We design our homes to fit our clients' size and home style preferences and we specialize in smaller, very green homes using Pattern Language concepts. Our vision is to work with our customers to create their ideal green home by providing professional guidance and the widest range of choices within a predictable process. Our custom passive/active solar, green residential design services are combined with a component package of materials for the rough, structural shell of the home; a super insulated, SIP structural shell and Pella's high performance windows.

When we began the process of searching for an architect / designer, we were specifically looking for someone experienced and knowledgeable with passive solar design. After interviewing several firms we chose Sunlight Homes, and throughout design and construction we never had cause to doubt or second-guess our choice. For those that may have apprehension about building a custom home 'over the internet', here was our experience. Our project was conducted from a distance, as we were living overseas at the time. This went very well. Evan accommodated us by making sure he was available for the design visits during our brief vacations back home and always being there for conference calls at the odd hours required by our time zone differences. Recycling of design concepts and drawings was always timely. Evan was able to propose creative options and solutions to design issues to account for structural challenges (earthquake standards and snow loads) in our project and was very diligent in working with our Planning Departing to finalize the building permit. Our builder commented several times that Evan was exceptional in timely response to his questions and requests for clarifications during the construction process. Given our location, we had no other option, and Sunlight Homes made it EASY. We have been in our new Sunlight Home for just over a year. Still smiling. It was 13 degrees below zero this morning. Since the sun came up, the heat has not kicked on. That’s a Sunlight Home.

When we chose to build a new home in Southern Indiana, we wanted a custom design with as many environmentally-friendly elements as we could afford. We found the perfect designer in Evan Davis of Sunlight Homes. Evan has been a joy to work with, from the preliminary chats and site visit to the first design and through several variations, some of which became major as we changed our minds about what we wanted. Unfailingly professional, patient, and friendly, Evan always kept our budget in mind and offered excellent lower-cost suggestions when our original ideas proved too expensive. Most of all, he used his innate talent and extensive knowledge of his craft to create a beautiful, energy-efficient design that is far better than the one we had in mind in the beginning. We highly recommend Evan and Sunlight Homes.

It was a pleasure to work with Evan Davis at Sunlight Homes. He was very responsible and diligently worked on my project even answering my most trivial of questions. Me Davis brought expertise to the project that I could not find elsewhere. Today people are amazed at the architectural design that was incorporated into the structure. His designed a beautiful home that we will be proud of for years to come.
