About Us

Storyboard Furniture brings furniture from “Tree to Table”. All our wood comes from fallen or ill-fated trees from backyards in the GTA. Often it comes from our client's own property to create singularly beautiful custom furniture with ecological integrity. We approach this work both as makers and artists. While we seek the sublime in function and form when designing our furniture, we also look at this process through a different lens, one of storytelling and meaning making. Beginning with the material form and beauty of the wood that is unveiled by milling a tree, the stories that tree has witnessed in it’s life are drawn out in our furniture with intelligent design and exacting craftsmanship. Imagine sitting in a chair made from the tree you climbed as a child.

Mike at Storyboard understood the design I wanted for end tables and executed a brilliant final product. I have two beautiful pieces that will be with me for a lifetime. I was in need of a stand to hold a sculpture I had when I approached Mike from Storyboard. I had a rough idea of what I wanted. Mike was not only able to fine tune the design to the specifications I needed but directly involve me in the different phases of the creation of the plinth to make sure we were all on the same page. The end product was more then I expected. It safely displayed and illuminated my heavy sculpture but the plinth itself was a work of art. Would definitely recommend Storyboard.

After enjoying it for many years, a few years ago a giant elm, 100 years old I’d guess, died in my backyard. We took it down and engaged Mike Sharpe to make a grand dinner table from the centre cut boards. There were irregularities to finesse, and they were - the work is meticulous. The resulting table is long and wide with a wonderfully thick top. I love standing at one end and gazing at the subtle sheen showing off the grain of the tabletop. When I first saw the finished product, I thought: This is a work of art, and I haven’t changed my mind.

I hired Mike to do 2 custom metal bases for my project. 1 was a pedestal for peninsula in kitchen I gave him an inspiration photo and he drew up an idea and pricing. 2nd was a frame to hold a handmade sink in a small powder room. In both cases he was very artistic but very professional I got proper quotes and timelines etc. He was a pleasure to work with and true artist who can bring vision and completion to ideas.

4 pieces of furniture we created from one 100 year old maple. Mike’s company milled the tree, kiln dried the lumber, made the bases and created art.

Mike Sharp created a limited number of lamps made from wood from the silver maple that was believed to have inspired the song "Maple Leaf Forever". The tree was felled by a wind storm in July 2013 and the timber was saved and offered to various artisans across Toronto. Mike's design was featured at the Green Living Show as a silent auction prize, and I was the successful bidder. I then decided to order two more lamps for my family as special souvenirs of Toronto history. Mike's craftsmanship was amazing, and the lamps are really works of art. The job was completed on time and on budget.

As well it was a great honour to be able to work with some of the wood from the Maple Leaf Forever tree. I was happy that we went ahead with the custom cutout of the car for one on the panels.
