For those of you Type As out there who live by the adage "Be bold, be brief, be gone" , read the first paragraph. For all others keep reading! Tony Talisse is bar none, the most respectful, professional, experienced, and knowledgeable general contractor my husband and I have ever worked with. He puts high value on quality control, which includes presence and timely availability on the jobsite when needed. He coordinates and supervises the work of his subs in every stage of the work, ensuring clarity about what and how he wants the work to be done, while simultaneously, listening to and respecting their functional expertise, and explaining necessary changes needed or "unexpected surprises" to the customer (typical when walls get torn out). On adhering to timelines, Tony underpromises and overdelivers: our estimated timeline for project completion was 10 wks (for kitchen and master bath renovation). Despite unexpected delays on materials' availability, and the "usual" surprises when walls get torn out, Tony's team finished in 5 weeks. Flippin incredible!! Several keys to his success: He has strong, respectful, and long-standing relationships with his contractors and pays them promptly when they finish each work phase; thus they may tend to prioritize his work requests in their schedules. Secondly, he does not stretch himself too thin, and actively and carefully manages the work he commits to, and the customers he chooses to work with. His multi-lingual skills allows him to connect well and clearly with both contractors and customers, and to skillfully defuse situations causing tension between subs, or between customers and subs. This started out as a work relationship, and Tony has become a friend, a rarity in the project management world, when you can count yourself fortunate to be on speaking terms with your GC at the end of a job! I have included more context if you choose to read it below.
My husband and I have recently relocated from the East Coast and were brand new to this area when we bought our house in Orange County. We were intentionally downsizing and as we were looking in California we were simultaneously purging a lifetime's accumulation of stuff, having raised a now grown family in the East. Despite our efforts, we suspected we needed to plan our new property with an eye on storage space. Tony Talisse came well recommended by our realtor, and from the first time we asked to meet with him, he was very responsive to meeting with us, actually shifting his schedule to accommodate our short timeline in the area when we were seriously putting an offer together on the 3 BR single family house we eventually purchased. We had 2 major projects we wanted to do as soon as we settled: renovating/updating the kitchen which was almost original to its 1986 building and improving the open space feel to the house; and renovating the master bath. Tony listened and took the time to explore the reasons behind our desires, and took careful note of our storage concerns and budgetary limits. We exchanged ideas, talking freely about what we liked and didn't like, and how we wanted our new kitchen to look and feel with attention to functionality, presenting a comfortable but yet casual elegance and welcoming presence to family, friends, and guests, while creating a sense of spaciousness as was possible in the space we had to work with. Tony's enthusiasm for his work, his on-the-spot creativity was immediately evident as he evolved 3 or 4 different designs that he proposed one by one, again exploring and carefully listening to what we liked and didn't like about each design he proposed, and then re-working them in new and different ways, never getting overly attached to any one of them. His purpose was clearly to put a design together that met as many of our needs as possible, that was also architecturally feasible. Adhering to our Budget limits was critically important to us, and he straightforwardly explained why some of the designs would be more costly than others, but emphasized that he was invested in doing the work that would both delight us and be affordable.
Having worked with a number of contractors in the past, including a major house rebuild from the ground up, the operationalization of the dream is where the working relationship can become strained, and the honeymoon is over. Not so with Tony. Yes, there were problems and issues. Most were either unexpected, or simply evolved as the job unfolded and necessitated clearer communication, or differences in expectations or misunderstandings that required real time negotiation. This is the real proving ground for what I look for in an "excellent" general contractor: does he have the maturity, experience/ skills, objectivity, and emotional intelligence to manage all the working relationships involved in the job in real time, and keeping all parties' eyes fixed on the shared goals of quality control, meeting time deadlines, and respect for the cooperation needed with other contractors' to ensure the work flows seamlessly. I can count on half a hand the number of times I have given anyone a top rating. And in my mind, Tony Talisse earned it. I love my new kitchen, I have plenty of storage space, our smaller house now has the open and spacious feel we desired, and the bathroom is elegant, contemporary and fits with our style. Feel assured you are hiring the best!
