“Aralia designed and built our small garden, transforming the ragged mish-mash of unplanned year-on-year additions into a more modern space with two water features and plenty of room to sit at various points to admire the planting and the design. Height is achieved through pleached hornbeams, black bamboo (which grows up rather than out) and a crab apple. The illusion of greater space in what is a small garden is provided by the rill and pond and pathways. Distinct planted areas now lead the eye to the flowers and plants. All completed with the minimum fuss and in good time.”

“We contacted Adolfo Harrison Gardens as we needed to redesign our large garden. Adolfo was very professional and seemed well experienced. He was able to come up with some excellent solutions in relation to the issues we had with the configuration of our garden, showing an extended and solid knowledge in design, plants and flowers. Always presenting us with several options to ensure we had choices. He was also great at listening, a skill many traders lack! He always took the time to ensure he understood what we wanted to achieve, checking step by step along the redesigning process, to ensure we were happy with it. Unlike many other garden designers we had contacted, he did not question our budget nor did he try to raise it. On the contrary he was very understanding and looked at achieving what we wanted in creative ways. His punctuality and tidiness have been impeccable as well as his attention to details. “We first met Chris when he was exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show, very much admired the gardens he created and stayed in touch with him. Some years later we were able to come back to him and asked for a plan for our tiny Cottage garden in the New Forest. Then, it was an ugly, depressing 'easy care' space that no one really wanted to use, in a conservation area with a large listed shed in the middle and very exposed. The largest usable area was filled with steps, dank concrete crazy paving, drains, bins and a boiler. Renovation and redesign needed someone with real insight to visualise what it could become. Chris created 3 individual areas within the garden, each with a slightly different purpose and character. The biggest area is now a beautiful sun trap and herb garden paved with warm terracotta sandstone with table and chairs and a parasol. We use it all the time and somehow the boiler is less noticeable. We have a more formal screened seating area to look out onto the Forest without feeling observed and a secluded grassy back garden for complete peace and quiet. Chris didn't feel the need to completely empty the garden as some designers might, but thoughtfully incorporated existing plants and features into the design and was flexible about amending it - such as when a well was found during works. This meant our new garden had immediate character, not just lots of tiny, new plants. He was a real pleasure to work with - sensitive to our budgetary restraints and receptive to ideas. He was tactful when telling us that some things wouldn't work too. As he lives a long way away we used a local landscaper to do the hard landscaping and liaised with Chris as the work was done. He came down and supervised the planting and was tactful with the landscapers but got his way. Chris really knows his plants and did us a proper planting plan and plant list. Not only are the species carefully chosen to suit the aspect but we got the loveliest variety of each and the vast majority have thrived. We are thrilled with our garden, we love and cherish it. We regularly receive unsolicited compliments about our beautiful garden, how appropriate it is to the situation and people ask who designed it. It is much easier to look after and an enormously rewarding space to enjoy. I have not put down a cost as I can't remember - but it was definitely money well spent. I can't see how to attach photos, but if you contact him he will know which garden this is. I would absolutely recommend Chris, he is more than capable, he's first rate.”

“Hillman Gardens transformed our garden, creating a a fantastic space for our family on what had previously been unusable and unappealing. Duncan replaced low quality concrete slabs and pebble on sloping land with a level patio of very attractive sandstone slabs. He enclosed the garden with a high quality timber fence that he made up himself as the width of standard panels could not be used. In addition to the patio a new canopy/porch was added to the front of our house. Duncan designed this and used high quality materials - the result was a functional and very attractive feature. We are very thrilled with the results! Duncan worked with us to find materials and solutions that fit our budget, and was professional and extremely helpful throughout. He worked carefully around a two year old who still raves about him. I would recommend Hillman Gardens to anyone - particularly where creative approaches and attention to detail are important. “Acres Wild - Talented garden designers I can't recommend these guys highly enough. 14 years ago I built a house on a high Wealden site in East Sussex and brought in Acres Wild to design the gardens. Their brief was to make it look like it had been there for ever, even though they basically started with a muddy field. They created a strong structure with a series of garden 'rooms' which became less formal further away from the house, and used heavy planting. They work on the basis of survival of the fittest. Since then the garden has matured and been featured in several magazines. The walled potager, built with 200-year-old bricks, even won a Sussex Heritage Award two years after it was built. If you want a formal knot garden or something very contemporary with water dribbling down a sheet of metal then Ian and Debbie would probably not be your first port of call. But if you want a stunning garden that you'll love to live in then you won't find better garden designers.”
