They offered hardwood overlays that matched the hardwood floor. All I did was rip the carpet off the stairs. One expert craftsman came in and installed the overlays over the existing staircase. It took him less than 2 days. There was no staining or varnish smell as they were pre-finished. We now have a beautiful set of hardwood stairs for a very reasonable cost.
