Houzz Tour: Casual Glamour in Dallas
Designer Emily Johnston Larkin successfully combines comfort and style in this chic North Dallas home
The state of Texas has a style all its own. Homes in this big and beautiful state have a diverse and unique style. The owner of this home in North Dallas wanted something that plays into two sides of Texas style — a comfortable living space with a touch of glamour. After getting remarried, the client wanted a new home for a fresh start, and hired Dallas designer Emily Johnston Larkin to help her create a home that felt livable and chic, with a touch of Hollywood Regency style.
To create the casual glamour her client wanted, Larkin stuck with comfortable furniture and fabrics combined with glamorous accents. In the living room, plush green armchairs are lined with brass nailheads, and stunning glass side tables contrast with the more subtle jute rug.
When the client first started working with Larkin, she wanted her entire home designed — paint, wallpaper, furniture and accessories. It's taken several years, but they've almost finished every room.

Existing hand-scraped hardwood floors were laid in a herringbone pattern in the entryway. Larkin kept the entry a clean and crisp white to let this stunning floor stand out.

The kitchen was done in warm woods and granite to blend with the hand-scraped hardwood floors and exposed wooden beams in the ceiling. Although some of the materials had been put in by the builder, Larkin had the granite and detailed backsplash installed for visual texture.

The dining room ceiling provided a bit of a challenge for Larkin. She knew they wanted a gold metallic paint for the ceiling, but she wanted it to match the gold wallpaper perfectly. Because paint darkens when it dries, the color kept turning out more bronze. After a few tries they were able to get it right.

While their is a mix of product throughout the house, the client did splurge on some high-end wallpaper, fabrics, and furniture to last.

A recreation room (complete with a custom Texas Longhorns pool table) is the perfect place for the clients to blow off steam at the end of a long day. Larkin outfitted a window seat with custom cushions and pillows for visitors to sit and relax while watching others play.

The client is such an energetic and charismatic person, and Larkin wanted to make sure that the home really reflected that. In the master bedroom, green and gold accents feel fresh but sophisticated, while a muted rug and wall color ground the rest of the room.

The glamorous combination of old and new is even present in the client's perfectly organized closet. Larkin had a chair and ottoman reupholstered to add color to this dressing space.

The guest bedroom is a bit more neutral than the master bedroom, and is a crisp and soothing space for overnight visitors to snuggle up for the night. A custom headboard makes the bed feel plush and cozy, and Larkin tied the room together by using the same fabric on the pillows and curtains.

Classic trellis wallpaper creates that Hollywood Regency look in this bathroom. A custom shower curtain is surprisingly formal — a chic update of the norm.
