Contracts with Contractors --Pre-nuptials before you say I do!

As an architect I receive many inquiries every day. Often I get what I call the clean up call..."I hired a contractor to renovate....." typically what follows is not pretty but typical for those who fall victim to not having their agreements in writing. Excellent article offering strong guidelines for contractors and homeowners alike. Too many of us believe "I told him I wanted it different." is sufficient. It is not. Without full details,things can and will go wrong very quickly. Even small jobs need details.

Great article, thanks! We're getting ready to break ground on our extensive remodel & I'm going through the contract with the contractor & making some changes before signing. I'm wondering if we can add our own "list" of changes/decisions that we have made prior to signing the contract or starting construction as the details differ from what the permitted plans show. I'm wondering if we would still be charged for a change order when we told them, in writing and before signing the contract, about the change. Do you happen to know?
