As a budget choice at the time we used 3/4" MDF with a 3/4" edge added to give it a depth of 1 1/2" and is painted with a grey paint and then top coated with a pearl glaze to give it a slight sheen to match the finish on the adjacent taupe laminate counter.
There are soft grey laminates that you can have made in flatwork which is what the taupe counter is.
