I just completed my winter squash harvest and on one of six plants that were grown from seeds i took from a butternut squash, i got the following squash in the picture. I have been growing butternut squash for years and have never encountered this before. I have searched and these look like honey nut squash to me? However they are also about 5 pounds each compared to the approx. 2-3 pounds that i've read about for honey nut squash. Can anyone help me with identification? Other possibility is that i got some random cross-pollination but i only grew butternut this year so this seems unlikely to me as there aren't any other squash being grown nearby.
Or are there butternuts that have been crossbred with honey nut (or vice versa) making this a throw-back?
