Rose species rosarians, historians, please help

I've been trying to transcribe a list of names of rose species, that were handwritten on landscape plans made in the 1930's for a public rose garden in the United States. I'm making an effort to see that these wild roses are indeed planted in this garden but some of the names have been changed from the 1930's and many are difficult to make out. I used helpmefind as much as I was able was able to make out dozens of other names but the following have vexed me.

Do you know what the following species names are?

-remember this was written in the 1930's and the species name might be different from the present one used.

-many of the letters ran together and they appear to have been written with a marker or pen and quill (joking)

Any help would be hugely appreciated. I would love to see the city add these wild roses to the rose park, there are several acres with lots of room.

There are 61 species named in total and I've figured out the others. But wouldn't a rose park with 61 wild rose species be magnificent?

I see a couple of them here on Wikipedia.

    Setipoda for #28
    Soulieana for #29
    Virginiana (syn. Lucida) for #32

    Good luck

I was thinking of rosa alba for the first one. See if the smudge goes above or below the line. How about rosa willmottiae for #34?

Could 23 be Russelliana? I'd imagine that 24 is r. eglanteria. Could 34 be Ellen Wilmott?

    34 is r. willmottiae.

My guesses, more or less intelligent:

No, 31. R. villosa L. var. pomifera (Herrm.) Desv. (ssp. villosa).
    No. 17 i Rosa platyphylla
No. 20 R. doncasterii (guessing wildly)

There is a book you might find useful, "Standardized Plant Names" 2nd ed. 1942. McFarland was heavily involved with this project, and there is a sizable rose section. What I have found most useful about it is the synonyms which can be used for web searches.

For Rosa bella... it gives Rosa bella, the Solitary Rose, and Rosa bella pallens, Pale Solitary Rose.

    My observations.
    1. My experience has been that whenever possible, species should grow own root. The species I ordered from Hortico have petered out and declined. I believe that rootstock incompatibility is a possible explanation.
    2. Don't grow species in section Cinnamomeae near one another. They sucker, and they will get confused with one another. They all look somewhat alike, and they can be hard to identify.
    3. My experience is also that in our climate, we're most successful with own root species roses from California (all California species) and Asian species. I've grown a section Caninae (probably rootstock), for several years, and the canes sunburn. R. arvensis has terrible leaf spot. R. glauca doesn't like the hot summer sun, and the canes sunburn. They will appreciate some shade.
3.5 I would grow R. spinosissima or Altaica for sure. Spins rock.
    4. Forest Farm's species are not always accurately identified. Don't get yellow species there. Try High Country Roses. Forest Farm does have nice R. foliolosa, R. woodsii and R. nutkana.
    5. Vintage sells Duplex and R. californica plena own root. You'll like it better that way. Californica Plena also for sale at a native plant nursery just north of Santa Rosa, a great place to get California species grown from seed collected by native plant specialists. The name is California Flora Nursery. I got my R. gymnocarpa there as well. You must grow Rosa californica and R. woodsii var. ultramontana. It's just a necessity in California to grow the local species. Get them from California Flora Nursery or another native plant source.
    6. I got Pteracantha from Paul Barden, and it's an excellent selection. I love it! It's huge, carefree, and unique. It is a must-have, one of my favorite roses.
    7. Please check the size of R. gentiliana before you make that leap.
    8. R. soulieana is large enough (think 12-16 foot canes spouting straight out of the ground), but it's an easy and interesting rose, healthy as can be.
    9. Duplex is wonderful, also easy, an exception to my rule against Northern European species. I do grow it in the shade of a tree. I also really like Cantabridgensis, a seedling of hugonis. It's vigorous, the canes are interesting in winter (mahogany red), and its vigorous, unlike many yellow species. Got it from Vintage.

    1. Laevigata is terrifying in its vigor, and in my garden it has a very short bloom period. Not worth the real estate, even if it has the cleanest foliage of all roses. It roots if you spit on it. It will be blooming shortly, and then it propagates easier than any other rose, if you want to grow it in spite of these warnings. I've given it away. It's vicously thorny and forms a 10 x 10 snowball.

Just a reminder that Rosa complicata has been identified as a macrantha hybrid.
