Aquarium chemicals?

Hi everyone. I have a couple of ceramic pots that I use as mini water gardens. One has a clump of juncus and the other holds a small pot of dwarf papyrus. I also dropped in a few aponogeton and nymphea bulbs that I bought in the aquarium section at WalMart. So far only the aponogeton has produced any leaves. The water lily bulbs have root coming out of them, but so far that's all.

Mosquito dunks appear to keep the bugs out of the water, but I'm wondering if it might help to use some of those "water clarifier" products for aquariums. Some of them also claim to control odors, and I admit my "ponds" can get pretty rank at times. Should I give these products a try?
