You're going to want one of the Canadian Explorer Roses - John Cabot, John Davis, etc... I have John Cabot and it does very well: gets huge, no winter dieback, and doesn't need spraying. Quadra is a good one too. Quadra is red and reblooms better than John Cabot but it can be harder to find.

For fertilizer, the first year wait until after the rose has bloomed. You don't want to give it to much until it has settled in. I use RoseTone and you are supposed to use it about once a month, but I usually forget and only use it once or twice during the summer and my roses still do well.

If you get a grafted rose, be sure to bury the graft union about 4" below the surface of the soil. That will protect the graft from winter damage.

"We would like something in pink or red that would climb well and be nice looking without much care."

Most roses don't climb themselves like clematis or other vines, they neeed to be trained and tied to some support.
So it is always some care involved with climbers.
