Intentional irritation? I like this idea of the Bard of Bar Harbor.

Intentional irritation comes with periodic dirty laundry viewing. I am OK with that.

Why is everyone sooo jaded? Geesh! Can't we all get along!

Ya sorry I took the low hanging fruit...

A truly awful idea to relegate the Jades to a basement corner - they don't grow well without light. I'll be glad to see them stay upstairs with the other succulents on the window-sill.

The older I get, the more ovate I get. I want a forum for ovate posters. Crassula ovata, however, should stay here.

I also think Jades should stay here and not have its own forum.

Some of you guys are pretty darn funny! Great jokes and comebacks...guess we would miss all this fun if Jades branched out on its own.

That wouldn't be as much fun...I've enjoyed the bantering (mostly) :o)

Mic Jagger said YOU CANT ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you can.

Why do Jades warrant it's own GW topic when it already has a topic named cacti and succulents ?

The request for more topics for patiular plants or species idea is not anything new and has been heard many many times before.

Did you read the dram part from Jeff where he implied he might be to lazy to click over to houseplants or containers but still likes to read the drama ?
He might not grow a Crassula ( or a jade of any type) but seems to me Mic Jagger might be right too ! We get what we can even when we dont try.

OK two cents from a forum newbie. I think that this group needs to stay as diverse and wide open as possible. What makes this particular group better in my opinion is the number of people it attracts. As a new guy you don't want to feel like your not part of the group. When subject matter gets refined and reduced so does the diversity of the people. Then it goes stale. So I say keep em here in hopes that we can have as many cool people to talk with as we do interesting plants to talk about.

But most of all we need to show TG how awesome he is for getting involved in this type of stuff at an early age and encourage him to do 2 things. First, keep it up it doesn't matter if your idea flies or flops, you didn't sit in the wings and do nothing, good for you. Second, learn to take a joke. Life's too short buddy fire back a little. Send me a message I got a million one liners!

OK someone help me down off this danged soap box, my feet are killing me!

    John

Even if there was a jade forum, what would keep people from not posting their questions here? (They may not know a jade forum exists) the jade forum would probably have a nice start, but over time become stagnant, and people would just resume posting their questions here.

Hi, I just bought a sense of humor at Lowe's. I put it in a new big pot with good rich soil and I water it at least twice a day. It gets the right amount of light but the bottom of the stem is mushy now and the leaves fell off. Help!!!!!! I really want to grow this sense of humor.

Some of us ( like myself) have kids too. Mine are now adults Even before they where teenagers the ideas they had to gain a successful future for themselves where much more outlandish than a Jade as a single plant topic.
Why I offered my comment is because they didn't give up on any of there good or not so good ideas as easily as the original poster did that's for sure.

    Dear Ozarkia.

My humor has been killed by the surroundings more than once. It shrivels in the cold. It needs light or it becomes very black. It also needs to be very very dry. No cloying sentiment, It clogs the drainholes and I can't laugh. I like a gritty mix of all kinds of material.good luck . And if all else fails, lop the old and start anew. I was not aware that Lowes had any good humor available.

Well, maybe I'm showing my age but ...

If one's going to quote such classic Rock & Rock, it behooves the quoter to get the quote right.

"Mic Jagger said YOU CANT ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you can."

Not quite Mr. Like; it was OK 'til the very end which actually says "... but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you NEED."

I don't think Mick & Keith would appreciate your improvisation as the difference of that one little word changes the meaning of the whole chorus, if not the entire song.

In this day & age of rabid commercialism, & all for one, seemingly none for all, maybe YOU DO get what you CAN.

But Mick & Keith, they said "you get what you NEED".

I'm nothing if not a true daughter of classic Rock (& Jazz, Blues, & particularly Bossa Nova, but that's another story for another day).

Intentional error or not at least a lurker had been drawn onto the hidden keyboard ;-)
PG even on a public forum it's okay to make mistakes at any age. Ole' Mic never said anything about things we dont need
Example: I didn't need some focus of attention coming from you with your corrections.
Reason why I dont need any focus of attention from you is: The thread is not about me but it is about thoughts and opinions of what YOU and others think about jades having it's own topic.
Are you old enough to not have an individual opinion. At this point fair to say you would of NEEDED ONE but didn't have one.

  • cactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5

At least we're moving from discussion of a new forum to the discussion of what Rolling Stones songs mean, but with still the continuing theme of miscommunication, so that's a vast improvement. Sideways doppelganger alert, folks.

  • asleep_in_the_garden

    Doppleganger...double-goer

    Hmmm.

I remember way back when certain people would start trouble here with lame stories that were nothing more than lies designed to draw us in and then leave us dumbfounded when the truth showed itself later.

Are these the same people you expect are behind new ids doing the same crap Jeff?

    aitg,

It wasn't me doing the suspecting (I hadn't even thought of that) but one more experienced than I in the ways and means of mean-spirited people who stir up a mess intentionally. Also from that person was the forum definition of a doppelganger - I'm just a babe in the woods sometimes. Thank you, 'Splainer of It All. But I like your definition, too!

Re: doppelganger -- "double walker" (or "double goer") is a literal translation. It has a similar meaning in forumspeak.

  • User

Well it'd be a good start if TG knew that Wikipedia isn't a reliable source to quote since it can be edited by absolutely anybody, irrespective of how little they may know or the quality of their info.

    Mr. Like:

As happens to me often, I didn't understand a couple of your comments, so I won't be commenting on them. Sometimes I read what you write 3/4 times & still don't understand it. I've sometimes thought being tri-lingual should give me some clue what you mean, sadly it doesn't.

I stand on my comment about the quote. Maybe I'm far too literal in this case, but I was taught that a quote is to be both verbatim AND correct or else why bother?

  • cactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5

You're being literal, not far too much, Karen - but that is what a quote is, I do declare.

Wes, I have to Google song lyrics sometimes (play that funky music right, boy!) - it's a useful resource for quoting. Otherwise, you're just paraphrasing, and what's the point of that when we have a connection to the Interwebus?

So this individual who is suspicious...
if it's who I think it is,I must say I've always admired that person from a safe distance. A firebrand this one,and a swift defender. LOYAL and passionate with a quick fuse.

A fast learner you are TG Just like it was with Sanserveria then they took away Adeniums next thing is how somebody wants it to be jades the next thing it's Adromiscus then Euphorbias then who knows what maybe even Haworithias.

If you know this much today imagine how much you'll know later
What you didn't need to learn on this topic is was what I already knew.
I would be insane giving in to a person who cant understand 75% of the English language when asked for they're individual opinion regarding your original JADE topic.

    I'm laughing

    I'm scratchin' my head

    I'm in a tizzy

But I'll say this...I don't think a tally is necessary. Usually, when a new forum is wanted by many, the post is made up of lots of one-liners, like:

    "Yes! I'd like a ____ forum!"
"I think a ____ forum would be fabulous!"
"Another vote for a ____ forum."

That hasn't happened, but many opinions have been aired.

My 2 cents: I will not go to split off forums, except on the rare blue moon. I like all my cacti & sux in one place. I don't have enough time for too many others.

So...I now return to my regular programming...

  • Danielle Rose

My two cents: the jades should stay here. As much as repetitive questions (on any topic) may irritate longtime posters, I think it's best to keep the cactus and succulents under the one umbrella.

I am now going to borrow John's soapbox for one quick moment: I will say, as one who's pretty new to this forum, but active in other web forums (fora?) for years, that this one is not the easiest to navigate ... I'm still figuring some things out. Thankfully I'm a decent "searcher" and have been able to find a lot of answers before I went and posted a new topic.

As tempting as it might be to spend 10 minutes sharpening your sarcasm skills replying to those with less-nimble searching fingers, maybe one can also just take the 30 seconds to do a search and paste a link to answering a "dumb" or repetitive question. I can say that searching for an answer and finding instances of a newbie's questions answered with sarcasm and reprimands is disheartening, and I hate to think of someone being too intimidated to post here. We should all get at least one gentle "please read the FAQ" pass.

Though I will say I've also seen MULTIPLE instances where a person simply won't "hear" what being said, or asks a question but doesn't really read or even care about the answer. Whether they're trolls or just posting to hear themselves talk, I couldn't say, but in cases like those, let 'em have it with both barrels. Personally, I decided long ago not to feed trolls, or give talking heads the attention ... but for those of you who think it's fun to engage, who am I to deny you your entertainment?! :)

Now someone help me down before I fall ...

  • cactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5

    Danielle,

I vote for you getting at least three of them myself, as you acquitted yourself well in treacherous territory. FWIW, there are fewer dumb questions than one thinks, IME, just inexperienced ones. Those I don't mind and direct, or try to, accordingly.

  • mrlike2u

We do have a twisted crowd here at times. It's been suggested to copy the Jade FAQ send it to a publicist then offer to sell it as a book to the jade enthusiast and beginners to make lots of money.
I see where this make sense, as some do reference Jades as a money plant

It doesn't matter how somebody finds an answer to there Jade growing questions but how reliable is the FAQ ?

In my opinion it's as reliable as some of the posters who may offer a response.

    Example:
On one thread there are no dumb questions, any plant related questions are welcomed and encouraged.

On another thread there are dumb questions with directions on how to answer them by saying READ THE FAQ.
A response that states read the forum FAQ is not an individual opinion nor is it or any form of any individual results .

There is nothing wrong with a person expressing their opinion involving current time Jade growing experience with words and pics. A real time comparison of one Jade to another is not found in an FAQ nor are any persons opinions or results.

Do we keep Jades here where they belong because people have a need to ask dumb questions with an alternative motive to bother people who have no opinion ?

Seriously what the Jade growing enthusiast wants and deserves is current time real people results and opinions as a response not directions on how to navigate a forum.

This may be a dysfunctional forum, but aren't we all dysfunctional to some extent? Again, I say leave the Cacti and Succulent Forum as it is... Who needs television when you have the entertainment we have had here lately?

I hear certain questions asked repeatedly by newbies. They are new, I chalk it up as them saying hello and then they ask a question to give purpose to their entry. I see that jeff is tired of answering soil questions. He has done it many times graciously. So I have answered them and so have others.

When I was new I was not sure what the Fac sheets were till several months after posting here. I was amazed that I could say something and people responded. I am a little slow on the computer. I didn't see it when I needed it. call me lazy unobservant, whatever, I will get there in the long run.

I think we need a fac sheet on soil issues and the peat issue and commercial cactus mixes and alternatives. I find the fac sheets inconclusive of the some major questions asked a lot. Who comes up with these fact sheet. Maybe we should write one . I am going to start a thread about this,

I quite like the idea of a jade forum, or even a crassula forum. But I don't really mind :) I would go to both the C & S forum and a jade forum. I think, looking at the posts, that it's a non-runner, though.

You have great enthusiasm, Teen. Good for you.
