I've seen methods where tomatoes are grown around the base of wire caged compost. Basically a 3 to 4 foot diameter cage, about 3 to 5 feet tall. The cage is filled with compost and the tomatoes are planted at the base on the outside and trellised up the sides. Serves two purposes...making compost and feeding the tomatoes. Three, if you consider the trellis aspect.

Sounds like you're being quite resourceful and I bet you'll have some fantastic tomatoes!

I have a roma tomato that I put into a big pot out in the yard, and worms got into it. That tomato is the healthiest one I have.

I've got many volunteer tomatoes (and a squash) growing from my trench compost holes around my garden. They seem to be the most vigorous of all the tomatoes lol.
