It is really outdated and not used much. Caustic to inhale the lime, plus you have to rinse and rinse it off the vegetables. I use Pickle Crisp. It is so much better and you can add right to the jars of pickles or to the brine to dissolve first.
I have never used it in my sweet pickles, just the Pickle Crisp.

Many of the old time pickle recipes used it and you still see it in a few recipes. With a few exceptions it has been replaced by Pickle Crisp. Gets the same results without the hazards of using lime.

thanks. it is caustic to inhale? yikes. I usually use pickle crisp in all my pickling recipes and it works very well. I think I will just toss the bag then. Thanks!

Definitely caustic and you have to be very careful to rinse every bit off the cucumbers. A triple wash is standard. It's not like pickle crisp, which remains in the jar.
