north MS evergreen shrubs

Originally from south Louisiana and now in No. MS due to Katrina. Not used to seeing few plants alive in winter.

Need to start landscaping and want some backbone shrubs/ small trees that stay green and maybe have berries or flowers in winter. Mostly sunny and windy site. Am thinking hollies, pyracantha. Can anyone up here in no. MS give me some direction? Thank you so much for any help. It is overwhelming to start anew after 22 yrs in one garden and a lifetime in the deep south. Red clayey soil here. I live in the Tupelo area.

I have some plants that I will be happy to give you. I don't live very far from you. I have three hollys, two crepe myrtles, many older named daylilies, a few small hellborus plants, and others that you can have if you want them. Check for an e-mail. Thanks Larry

Go with a native:
Ilex vomitoria or yaupon holly. Red berries in winter. Birds seem to like 'em. Wanna come down to OS and dig all you can stand?

I am just a little south of Tupelo. Gardineas are real nice evergreens with a wonderful white flower. Many of the azaelas are evergreens as well. It is real hard to beat them.
