Seed Snob

I think over the years I have become a seed snob. I didn't buy seeds from big box stores or farm stores.....I had to either order them or buy them from a Garden Supply place where they sold bulk seeds and bagged them up. Well, we lost our big store in town and so I picked up some seeds off the rack at Wal Mart. Egads! Well, those seeds came up in two days under the lights. I planted broccoli and cauliflower and now have 4 large six packs filled to capacity.

I just bought two scoops of spinach seeds from our local MFA.

They have a small supply of bulks seeds and also some rack seeds. I plan to go back soon to get sweet corn seeds because if they sell out they won't restock. They carry Bodacious corn and I have grown it before.

No shipping charges either!

No shipping charges is a good thing. I think you get lots more seed when you buy the bulk scoops. Since I am not a big vegetable planter, radishes are the ones I like to get in bulk. I went nuts on ordering different kinds of tomatoes the last couple of years. This winter I haven't ordered any more. Really I already know of a few I like really well and the getting all different kinds sometimes pushes out the ones I know are good. I looked through my seeds the other day and planted all I had left of Pale Perfect Purple tomatoes and those are coming up. This year I want to keep more of the tried and true and just save a little space for the new ones.

I hate to pay shipping too. It would be ok if there was one place that had everything a person wanted but I always find one or two things in each catalog that I want. I was going to order okra from Baker Creek this year but I found 'Emerald' at Walmart and that was one that I wanted to try. A couple people in the veggie forum were praising that variety.

Which MFA do you go to Glenda? I miss Hummerts. The place that was from Joplin and Monett that had a booth at the Lawn and Garden show needs to take advantage of Springfield's lack of a good seed store and open a place here. Somebody put a bug in their ear. : )

I was at Joplin Greenhouse yesterday (that place of Joplin/Monett) and they have really expanded the inside part. About four times more seed, bagged perinneals, and even rock phosphate and greensand. I am impressed!

They'll get their vegetables in 1-1/2 weeks. Can't wait. They have the best spinach plants and beautiful lettuces.

I'll have to stop by there. I was looking for rock phosphate after I read something about it having trace minerals. Now I forget what I read about it. I hope we get some rain today. It looks like spring is almost here.
